New LSU offensive line coach James Cregg appeared on ESPN 104.5 FM’s Off The Bench Thursday morning and said that true freshman Cole Smith is competing for the starting center spot on LSU's offensive line.

Cregg said Smith and Lloyd Cushenberry are battling to replace former LSU center Will Clapp who is headed to the NFL Draft. Per The Advocate:

“Right now, going into spring, I look at Lloyd Cushenberry and Cole (Smith) battling,” Cregg said during an interview Thursday on ESPN 104.5 FM’s Off The Bench. “A true freshman playing center in college at a major top 5 institution, it could happen, but it could take a lot of reps. I like to see those two guys compete.”

Smith, a 6-4, 280-pound Mississippi native, signed with LSU as the eighth-ranked center prospect in the 2018 class. Cushenberry served as an immediate backup last season as a redshirt freshman, seeing some spot duty at guard and center.

Freshmen legitimately pushing to start? I am absolutely salivating. We should have the protection and receiving core for a talented QB to shine. No excuses!!

Agree. No excuses not to have a competent passing game this season.

Smith dominated the All-American game he played in (can't remember which one). Very underrated coming out, imo. He is an exciting prospect with a mean streak.

So 4 of 5 starters could be sophomores or freshmen? Imagine what this line will look like in 2 years! Les miles could run behind that line and get 1000 yards and 10 tds

In 2 years all of the current sophomores and rs Fr will have just declared early regardless of their draft potential.

The thing that stands out most to me is Charles’s shoulder surgery. That ain’t cool.

Isn't he a little on the small side? 280? Where does he need to be weight-wise?

no. Centers are usually in that range.

Having a true freshman starting OL shows a severe lack of depth. It's not a good thing.

Now that goofy Grimes has moved on, we finally have a chance to have an outstanding offensive line.
