I have never read his stuff but have heard him compared to Cormac McCarthy so I ordered The Long Home and Provinces of Night from Night from thriftbooks. Thoughts?

They are good books. I like Larry Browns stuff better though.

Sucks that we lost him so young. On Fire and Big Bad Love were my favorites.
I've been suggested William Gay, but I just picked up a Harry Crews book I'm about to start. Have you read him?

I have heard of Larry Brown but not familiar with him. It is a similar style?

Southern gothic and Brown writes beautifully. Father and Son is one of the best American tragedies ever written.

I like William Gay but Larry Brown was on another level. I recommend Brown first. As already said, sucks he’s gone and I would read Father and Son immediately.
