Help me remember this short story (at least I think it was a short story)

It was something I read many years ago - maybe even in high school or college. I remember the plot, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the story or the author.
The story was set in a rural setting - I think a farm or maybe very small town. There were 3 main characters. Two brothers - one bookish and the other more a popular, good looking, salt of the earth type. And a pretty girl. The basic story was that everyone thought that the popular brother would marry the girl but she and the bookish brother fell in love and got married. The twist was that years later, all three were unhappy - the bookish brother didn't keep up the farm/house and there were books lying all around. The girl grew disillusioned with him. And if I remember the other brother also ended up unhappy.
Anybody remember this? And if so what was the name of the story and the author?

That is familiar to me also. The story could be (not saying it is) the basis for the movie, Splendor in the Grass.

Sound like a Flannery OConnor type story
