I did too. I thought the end was perfect? Made total sense.
I get that. I just felt a little let down, especially after King left a snide comment about readers wanting an ending. I honestly believe King didn't know what he wanted to do with the series after the 4th book.
And the ending was like "hey, there was an item that I never mentioned at all in the series until the end, but now its important to the tale that Roland has this item." (I'm trying to not spoil the ending here, but those who read the book know what I'm talking about.)

I don't want to spoil it either but I think you totally misunderstood that part.

This is getting strange. Now at the part with the "prisoner". I'm pretty much sucked into this world at this point. I like how King still hasn't really told us why Roland is going to the tower, what his quest is or why his world is in such bad shape. I have my thoughts about what's going on though.
I don't really get the attack by the crabs. It seemed a little unnecessary, Roland was in bad shape and desperate for help before the attacks. Why did he need to get half eaten by a giant crab? But that's me being nit picky.

Could make him rely on his ka-tet more later in the story with permanent injuries.

Oh I'm sure it was to take him down a few pegs from "badass gun slinger" to something more vulnerable.
Just finished the shootout to get Eddie. Pretty freaking intense. King does a great jobs with allusions to the tower with the mob guys. I actually laughed at the soft drink part, "sugar! So much sugar!".
Has anybody seen the movie yet? Does it follow the first book at all? I've read it's kind of all over the place.

Read this series through and through 4 times, still my all time favorites. King out does himself in this brain/time/reality warp.

I finished the audiobook for book 1 and I thought it was awful.
Just not my cup of tea.

I hated the movie. They took Roland and twisted his entire character around, then raped the man in black of all his mystique and made him a point and click sorcerer.
