Storm of Steel by Ernst Jünger

Just got done with it today. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in WW1, military history or war memoirs in general. The book is the memoir of Ernst Jünger who was an officer in the German army in World War I. It gives brutal and uncensored accounts of what the war was really like. There’s some seriously messed up stuff in this book but it’s super interesting as well. Some parts are horrifying like when he’s digging a trench and finds layers of corpses buried in the mud, or when his company gets hit on the road with an artillery barrage and pieces of his men scatter the area. Other parts are thought provoking such as when he is about to execute a British soldier but the soldier pulls out a picture of himself with his family and so he is spared. The author was wounded 14 times but always came back for more. It’s a miracle he survived the war. Overall, the book gives an unfiltered look into WW1, which obviously includes a lot of gore and fatalism but also gives you a peak into life in the trenches and behind the German lines. The book gives a German perspective that we rarely see here in the US. He just told it how to was. Once again I highly recommend if you are a war fan. Great book.

Later in life, Junger was a key figure in the conservative, anti-Nazi movement within the German establishment in the 30s and 40s, and universally hated by German Marxists after WWII.
Lived to be over 100.

Great book. Someone here recommended it and was not disappointed.

I enjoyed reading it but may need to pick it up again. I started reading Now It Can Be Told as well but have never finished it.

Storm of steel is insane. Gets really good towards the end when he kind of just looses it. Don’t blame him after what he went through. That’s just one story too.
