I agree. He was an oaf, but it's freaking Kansas. He won as many bowls in his 5 years there as they won in the previous 100 years.

Always amazes me how the definition of success can change so quickly (see Virginia)

I am thinking his attitude and defiance after the allegations came out had more to do with him being shown the door than the allegations themselves. he was pretty much telling everyone FU after it came out

They just got very lucky two seasons ago with regards to their Big XII schedule. They were never that good.

This statement is true, but I disagree with the spirit of the sentiment. KU escaped having to play three teams that undoubtedly would've cleaned their clock that year: OU UT and TT. To further their luck, the Big 12 North was worse than it is now...hands down the worst portion of any conference in the country in 2007. Just awful...somebody mentioned Sunbelt status and that's right on the money. They ended up 12-1 that year and that's why it is impossible, to this day, to explain to KU alums why LSU ended up winning the NC that year. It's like discussing the state of the program with Miles apologists: "But we' were 12-1." Blah, blah, blah...you also got beat by the only good team you played in conference.

All of that said, I attended grad school at KU from 2000 to 2003, and let me make something clear: KU could have been beaten by good high school teams in those years (though I was present when KU beat UAB...and the next week when it was announced over the loud-speakers that LSU was losing to UAB--embarassing). Players were in trouble with the law. Opposing fans in the stadium outnumbered KU fans 3 to 1. It was as bad a scenario as one could find.

Enter Mangino. KU makes it to a BCS bowl and has a winning season for all but a couple years when he took over. He's a good coach...not the best head coach, but a good assistant. I would like to see Mangino on the sidelines/booth at LSU.
