You're comparing LSU vs. USC, and on that front, I think LSU matches up more than favorably with USC. Recruiting? Money? Facilities? Fanbase? Conference? Sorry, those are all in LSU's favor.

Flagship in a state that has proven to have top tier talent. Not as much competition for in state recruits.
Next door to texas
We have proven since Saban that we can get the best wherever they are.

Between cost of living and taxes, LSU could pay Herman a third less than USC and he would still take home more money.

California produces a ton more talent than La. It's not even close. USC is also a national brand that can cherry pick nation wide.

USC has still recruited well even under harsh sanctions. They are the top dog on the west coast without a doubt.

It sure does produce more talent, but it also has many, many more schools drawing from that talent. Any halfway decent recruiting coach should have La talent on lock for LSU.

LSU doesn't have to recruit nationally, but if necessary we could. Lock down La talent, pick-up a few from TX and FL and we'll be more talented than 95% of teams in the country.

Sure...LSU will add a lot more in the next few years

ETA: I suppose you assume that as soon as USC gets a better coach it can finally compete with the coaching genius of Les Miles. Well, I heard that dude is available. Perhaps USC will hire Les Miles....because HE is the reason LSU has more NFL players....right?

Ok. In Cali, there is:
USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford

Louisiana produces the most NFL players (talent) of any state per capita and it's only LSU in the state. We get our pick.

Our region produces more NFL players than the west coast. There's a place called Texas that shares a border with Louisiana. Our recruiting advantage is obvious.

Yes a lot of schools do come in, but USC is the dream school in that state.

That is true, but LSU hasn't always been able to pull that off. What was LSU football before Saban?

With Cal, USC, Stanford, UCLA, SDSU, etc. all competing for those recruits.

And besides Cali the surrounding states dont produce nearly as much talent as Texas and the southeast.

This isnt even debatable.

USC is still pulling in better talent. Cal isn't close to being a threat to USC on the recruiting trail.

Rocky Long has done a good job at SDSU, but they ain't recruiting the same blue chip players.

USC isn't the competition for Herman, its UT or us.
This, and UT is a real threat.

Herman has connections in Texas, UT is more prestigious than LSU as a University and arguably as a football program, Austin is a better town than Baton Rouge, UT can pay more than LSU if they want and Texas has no state income tax.

The point is, Cal is there. There is no "Cal" for LSU to compete with here. And then UCLA
