It's NFL, so a little different, but Mike Tomlin was a coordinator for one year and then hired by Pittsburgh (who has an outstanding history of making phenomenal coaching decisions) to be the head man. Now he's regarded as a top 5 coach in the league. He's a great coach because of who he is, and it would have been dumb to discredit him based on "lack of experience."

Wait a second... Tomlin was raised up with in the organization,,,was a player and a long time assistant...

Gus on the hand is 5 years removed from HS football. Crowton looked pretty good in 2007...

Let's keep a level head...

What happened to the Rutger's coach? He is not the hot name now? Why not? Because they are backsliding? Did he suddendly become a worse coach? No, he just doesn't have a guy like Rice making him look good.

It's more about the players than people realize.

Bobby Bowden on finishing in the top 5 15 years in a row "We've just always have had more horses on the bus that the other guy, you know what I mean?"

You need more than a good offense to win. Auburn fell apart at the end last year.

i agree urban needs the perfect QB. i just think malzahn adapts to his personnel and can be NC worthy with the right QB- see: newton, cam

that is what I said, he needs the qb. Mustain is a bust and Tulsa didn't win shite, what is your point?

who was the QB at tulsa? a no namer. Malzahn was their offensive coordinator- not the head coach. its not his fault the D blew nut sack. the point is his offenses always piles up the yards and points.

think auburn's offense with LSU's defense. we'd never lose a game!

No he wasn't.

He was a Dungy disciple and coached in Tampa for years. Not sure on his playing career, but I don't think he played there either.

He was a complete outsider to the entire organization, but obviously well known within NFL coaching circles.

I agree 120 billion percent.

Players make coaches, it's rarely the other way around. It's why recruiting is the single most important part of the job.

I'm not sure Malzahn has the fire or energy to lead a big program, he's a pretty quiet guy.

i dont know his personality. ive heard hes an ego maniac- but what elite college coach isnt? i have a hard time believing a coach with his credentials and his innovation doesnt want to be the head guy, with everything on his shoulders.

he made the tulsa QB look pretty good. he made all-world mitch mustain look like the gatorade player of the year. hows he doing these days? i agree you need players, but he'd get his share at LSU. esp when they are racking up yards on offense.

I have been around him a little, and from what I can tell he's pretty down to earth, not a big ego guy at all, from what I could tell (although it might be a little bigger after this year).

Before Petrino became available, Gus was my choice for HC at Arkansas even though he was one year removed from high school. Gus will be successful at any program he decides on.

I am still just amazed at how fast he went from high school to the number one offensive coordinator in the country.

Lots of guys have been great Xs and Os coaches, but failed as the head coach - just ask Charlie Weis who is an exceptional pro coordinator.

Everyone keeps saying he failed, when you can't recruit worth a shite because of recruiting restrictions.

He is one of the hardest working coaches I've ever been around. He motions players around to put the defense out of position. I'll break down a play he has:

-Out of the spread you put the slot receiver in motion. You hand it off to him on the speed sweep, at Springdale he called it Wheel Skywalker. Wheel is the left side slot receiver and motion him into the speed sweep. Your QB also fakes up the middle.
-Now if you notice the defense isn't respecting the QB and is flowing to the sweep he would later call Wheel Brown Skywalker. Which would be the same play look, but instead the QB fakes to the WR and runs up the middle.

He runs this at every school he's been at. The commentators get it confused with a QB Read, but it really is a designed choice.

He has had good athletes around him in Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Peyton Hillis, Cam Newton. He has good speaking skills, at least better then Miles. At Springdale he was Head Coach and Athletic Director.

I really think whatever school picks up Malzahn will get a great coach. At Arkansas, Tulsa, and Auburn Malzahn has put up some pretty good numbers.

Been a huge fan of Malzahn since Arkansas. Regardless of how much I might hate certain teams that he's coached for, I am just in awe of his command of offensive principles. He doesn't need to look at his playbook, because he has the playbook memorized!? I didn't know he was AD and HC at Springdale. I'd assume that those positions prepared him with enough organizational/leadership skills to be a successful major program HC. I will wish him well anywhere he goes. He's an exceptional thinker and is making college football a better sport.

yea he was the Athletic Director over the Springdale School District(Springdale High, Har-Ber High, Central Junior High, Southwest Junior High, George Junior High, etc..).

At Springdale he had a super team of Damian Williams, Andrew Norman, Mitch Mustain, Bartley Webb, Alex Tejada, Ben Cleveland, and a bunch of other players. He kept his team focused all season. They didn't even come close to slipping up in a game. That season SHS played Evangel and Jenks, two of the top programs of Louisiana and Oklahoma and mercy ruled both teams by halftime(35 point lead, clock never stops). The entire season SHS mercy ruled teams by halftime, except for the state championship. They fell 1 point short of the mercy rule in the game.

I've always thought Malzahn to have a lot of character and a hard worker. When he took SHS to the State Championships in 2005 he took his team to the childs hospital in Little Rock and had the players read to the kids. Outside the stadium he thought the teams minds weren't focused on the game, so he had a walk through of the game plan in the parking lot.
