This makes no sense being a head coach in the sec is better than the sun belt conf.

I would say it is a better job for him as in a better fit for where he wants to go and do.
It may be a better "fit" for "him", but from an outsiders view, it's strange as hell. After what he was able to accomplish at AU last season, a Heisman winner, undefeated season, top ranked offense, BCSNC trophy. Not to mention coaching in the best conference in the nation at a school with top facilities, top level talent.... To take a half million dollar a year pay cut at a non-BCS school in Arkansas?

not a according to AU fans in this thread. Ark st. is a better job than Vandy, even with less money. You can score a big gig like ole miss.
However, if you are a success at AU as an O.C. you can't score a big gig. Therefore, you have to take less money at a small school to get a big gig like ole miss. For some reason Richt, pelini, Muschamp, Stoops, fisher, ect didn't get that memo.

no you're the one who whines when you're called a retard when you're acting retarded.
You're also very dense and do not look at the big picture and accept the weight of the evidence rather you focus on one point to make your argument. And you appear thin skinned.

I agree with most of this.
Two ways to look at it...and based on your alligences is how you'll choose to do it.
Vandy is a better job in the sense that it's in the sec, pays more and more exposure. Yet it seems at vandy the coaches there have hit their cealing as it is a tough place to have even a modicum of success
Where as with arky state you don't have that exposure but can as proven by freeze (forgive the spelling if wrong, i honestly didn't even know ole miss had hired a coach unitl days after it happend) you can make the jump to a big program. Also the fit part for gus falls in. In that sense it can be viewed as a better job.
But like i said, depending on your (not singling you you, using general your) feelings toward auburn is how you're going to "spin it."

A lot of people don't understand that because someone makes a decision they, or the "majority" wouldn't make, that doesn't mean it wasn't the right decision for another person and their families. Contrary to popular belief, the world doesn't always revolve around money and places...even though a lot of people do. Different people have different motives, values, and priorities.

Gus left AU for Ark state because he wants to be a HC, he's from Ark as well. He is likely kicking himself for not taking the Vandy job last year but he was being looked at by bigger programs at the time. He was on the short list at UNC, Ole Miss, Kansas, Tulane and so on, all of the programs hired coaches with previous HC experience.

Gus stated in the presser that he has the job he really wanted. He not only wanted to be a head coach but wanted to be in full control of the program so he can do exactly what he wants without distractions (not an exact quote). I got the impression that he sees the job as a long-term challenge, where he can feel secure in doing just that, and wants to take ASU to another level. He had great things to say about Auburn and is looking forward to coaching their bowl game, and then hitting the recruiting trail for ASU. He felt that he owed that to Auburn.

Thanks for the insight and confirms some of my ideas of why he left. He wants to be able to show his offense without input, or direction. Good for him. Then when he goes into an interview for a better job he has real proof. I said he wanted to be able to do what Chip Kelly is doing in Oregon. Makes better sense to me now.

If he just waited 24 more hours, he would probably be the odds-on favorite to get the Pitt job. Didn't Graham run a similar offense to what Malzahn does? It would be a seamless transition.

I don't think he would have had the recruiting base there do you? I don't know much about Pitt at all really.

Not about the money . . . That's it exactly as he said this afternoon. He will have rabid support from the HS coaches in the area as well as the town itself. Jonesboro can be a great town for the more family-oriented types.

That's correct. He made it very clear that he is exactly (beyond any doubt) where he wants to be. He is the one who contacted the AD this past Thursday after the job became available. He is good friends with a lot of high school coaches in the area (present and former) and made it clear that he is proud to be a former high school coach. Hugh Freeze and Steve Roberts are close friends as well, so he knew exactly what he wanted and the situation at hand. He was just waiting for the right time for the situation to present itself and the right time is now, and the right situation is at ASU.
He stated that coming home was what he really preferred to do, beyond being any place else, and it's where he plans to be for a very long time. He stressed this.
I could tell that he was really thankful for his time at AU and made it very clear regarding his love and respect for AU. He just wanted to return home and be instrumental in taking ASU to another level. The AD also made reference to what has been done at schools like Boise State and that he, GM, and the university are ready and committed to enabling and making this happen.
He stated that he felt like he and his family will get the love and support they need in the Jonesboro community and doesn't prefer to be anywhere else. Beyond any doubt, he made these points very clear.
Regarding his choice in taking a cut in salary, etc., he stated something to the effect 'I'm not what one would call a typical or "normal coach" and I don't tend to make typical or "normal coach" choices.' (paraphrasing)
It makes sense. That's one reason he's been very successful.
