I vote it doesn't have to be a big time hire, hire the best coach that can build the LSU program. If Woodward decides that is Napier great.
Wasn't it the maybe or maybe not board sauces that said it would be a big name hire. I dont believe them much.

My recollection is that there wasn’t much backlash to hiring Saban, if any. The biggest reaction I remember was that he wasn’t on most folks rumored lists of candidates, so a pleasant surprise.
As for the comparison of the two, Saban had been a NFL DC and head coach at both Toledo and Michigan State. That far exceeds Napier. Now Mark Hudspeth on the other hand….
Also consider this. When we hired Saban LSU hadn’t won a national championship in 40 years and was 5 years removed from the darkest period in program history.

I agree that Napier is a really good coach, but don't pretend it's not a huge leap to go from a Sunbelt school to LSU. I don't think many people dislike Napier because he's at ULL as much as it's a Sunbelt program. I'm sure the reaction would be similar if Napier was at Troy or UAB or App State.

There was definitely some as a lot of LSU fans only knew Saban as the guy that lost to Dinardo in the Independence Bowl. But a lot of LSU fans are dumb as all frick, too.
