I seriously doubt they would let Ed come back just b/c of possible animosity. I thought I read in several articles that the coaches and players didnt want to play for him.

Shea says LSU never formally offered Riley a contract, which tells me Riley’s side created a diversion knowing he was leaving OU for USC.

Semantics. The contract offer occurs near the end of the process. There may be final negotiations on wording and technical aspects, but the deal is all but done at that point. It is a convenient face saving phrase: “we never offered a contract” diminishes the true level of interest and extent of the negotiations.

Pretty obvious what happened. The USC deal was done and Woodward tried to pry him away from USC by offering more money and it didn't work.

Is the stuff about Riley not wanting to coach in the SEC true? If so I doubt we got far in negotiations. The reason why LSU was mentioned with Riley was a smokescreen, and a negotiation tactic by his agent.

Makes you wonder how TBL and others were so far off
There were also insiders who have said they heard it wasnt Riley the entire time and LSU was going the NFL route

Lincoln is soft. I've been saying it all along.
He doesn't want to compete in the SEC. We are better off.

I think there is a lot of truth to that, but until he had the best USC offer in hand, he had to keep LSU engaged. If you're scared, being in the SEC at LSU has got to be a better option than SEC at OU.
