I think they have an offer ready to make to Chavis. Still nothing new to on O, I think his agent is trying to play the "game", who knows, we'll see what happens

BP: You have made me a happy man. Thank You. I will say a Novena to our Lady of the Contested Gridiron to help make this happen.

What have you heard on the DB coach front?

Some people were saying that Chavis was the safe hire. Others were saying that Walker would be a great hire. What is the reputation of Walker and Chavis as far as agressiveness and gameplanning?

I kinduv worry about Chavis because of his lack of success vs. Florida's spread offense, and his supposed inability to make halftime adjustments. He just seems to be a less aggressive verson of Bo Pelini.

He has had more success than most, actually. The past four years UT's offense's incompetence is why UF has beaten them, not the defense.

iirc UT held UF to 240ish total yards this year.

I was one of the posters saying Chavis would be "safer". I feel that way because he has 10 years SEC experience and has demonstrated the ability to Coordinate Top Five defenses in the SEC.

Some of his defenses have been highly agressive and others not so much. I ASSUME the difference is personnel. I like a coordinator who adjusts based on available personnel in lieu of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

There was a credible post which indicated that Chavis may be much better given time to prepare and may be unable or unwilling to make defensive adjustments at halftime. This would be a problem.

The credible poster did say that Chavis' defenses invariably get better as the year progresses. The sign of a good teacher who is mentoring and whose players are buying in and learning. I like this.

Walker, in a nutshell, has less of a track record in the PAC 10. He undoubtedly had less talent at his disposal but was also going against less talent, week-in week-out.

People say Walker is a better recruited, but I don't see it. For waht it is worth, Pellini was not a big (active) recruiter and people are rewriting history to elevate his status.

I think we upgrade with either, so no need to loose sleep. With either, some of the other position hires will be critical.

I just found the link:

I am not worried about his recruiting, we have people specifically hired for that. His record is impressive, and he brings a lot of positives to whatever program he is in. But like the link mentioned, "soft zone" is not a good phrase in Baton Rouge.

Overall, he or Walker would suffice. Add in some good position coachs, and LSU is back on track defensively.

I disagree. The talent in the Pac10 is offensively biased, just like the talent in the SEC is biased towards defensive players. This year was a down year in the Pac10 for offense, and even so they had more offensive firepower than the SEC as a whole. In past years, the offenses have been even more powerful. Oddly, this year in the SEC the offenses were more potent and plentiful than normal.

Maybe so. I still prefer Chavis. What about you?

I'd be satisfied with both. I believe both are fundamentally sound and both can get and will have the respect of the kids. I like Walker better for his recruiting and ability to make kids want to play really hard for him, and I like Chavis better for his SEC experience and stability.

For what we need next year, which is someone who can get the respect back (and I mean kids respecting the coaches) to go along with teaching them and motivating them, I'd prefer Walker. But he's a short term hire, 3 seasons at most...most likely 2 or even 1 - so Chavis would be a good choice too.

At least with Chavis we would know exactly what we'd be getting - a solid, well drilled DC that would have a top 15 defense at least 2/3 years. With Walker we'd have a solid, well drilled defense...but it is uncertain how well they would perform over the long haul of the SEC. I firmly believe we'd be a top 10 defense, but that's the rub isn't it? We just don't know.

...and the Clemson board admin still thinks Chavis to Clemson after the bowl

I'm a little surprised that money would be BeBe's biggest roadblock right now! I know how much he loves being back in Louisiana with his family and friends. There must be a big gap between LSU and the Saints or Tennessee.

You know, I've learned something - we've only got so many seasons on this earth. The man was an SEC head coach. He's coaching in the NFL. If he's considering, then it must be possible. However, I'm not going to begrudge the guy from trying to tweek the compensation package. It's not like a head coaching job where he's going to make millions a year. If he's making $500k at New Orleans, and the offer is up to say $380 or $400k at LSU - put yourself in his shoes - go home and say, "Honey, we're going to have to get by with $500k less than we planned over the next 4 or 5 years."

Now, there' more to life than money, but I can't blame the guy for trying to get the compensation package right.

UT still thinks Orgeron to UT.

Walker may be in line for head coach at NMSU.

Miles is making statements about the talks being still preliminary.

We MAY be totally frickED.

No need to freak out. I think deals for nearly all the coaches have been made under the table personally.
