Others think the BIG 10 is the best fit academically.

Given that the B1G likes to crow about having the most AAU schools of any conference and that Missouri crows about a century of being a AAU school, this makes a lot of sense.

Interesting article about re: Mizzou, Nebraska and the AAU: LINK

Personally, I think Mizzou makes more sense in the B1G. But it's also hard to see them going to any conference that doesn't include Kansas, their most hated rival. Kansas, like Mizzou, is an AAU school dating back to 1909. I could easily see Mizzou and Kansas heading to the B1G if the Big XII goes the way of the SWC. Maybe they add K-State and Iowa State (another AAU school) and make it the Big 16. That would be a much cultural fit than Mizzou heading to the SEC. I guarantee you that the schools in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska won't miss playing schools from Oklahoma and Baja Oklahoma.

The SEC has such a rabid, passionate fanbase in part because the NFL and MLB ignored the South before the 1960s. Until the 1960s, there wasn't a single NFL or MLB franchise south of St. Louis -- which is why so many old timers were Cardinal fans because KMOX out of St. Louis was the only baseball you could hear at night in the South (Navin R. Johnson's favorite radio station was KMOX!). Hence, college football became huge in the South (probably would have anyway, but the absence of pro competition only helped its growth). Whereas Mizzou has always had to compete with the MLB and NFL in KC and STL. Pro sports are much bigger in the Midwest because they have a long history and Missouri is far more Midwestern culturally (especially in the major metros like KC and STL).

The SEC would like the Missouri TV markets but I just don't see it as a good fit culturally. St. Louis and Kansas City have a lot more in common with cities like Omaha, Chicago and Milwaukee than with cities like Memphis, Atlanta and New Orleans.

The only good reason for the SEC and Mizzou to marry up is TV markets/money. But they could do just as well in the B1G.

Frick, I don't know. I just don't think Mizzou is a good fit for the SEC. A&M is a much better fit in my opinion.

Interpret this as you may. I think we're out of the Big 12 for sure now.

I think that inviting Mizzou would be the best possible thing that the SEC could do.

It would be a win/win for all concerned.

I agree. I'd love for Mizzou to join for my personal reasons since I'm a LSU fan, but as for Mizzou athletics I don't think it's a good idea.

Joining the BIG is way better for Mizzou since the athletes wouldn't have as far to travel from Columbia/Missouri to the other BIG states. Good point about STL and KC being more midwestern, our MLB teams are already in the same divisions as teams from MN,OH,MI,WI,IL,and PA. Fans in those states already have something in common with Mizzou. I think they'd welcome Mizzou more than SEC fans would.

I've been pro-SEC for a long time now, but it's gotten to the point where I don't care where the hell we go. Just get us out of this damn burning building.

I hear you but don't you think Mizzou belongs in a conference with schools from states like Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and the like?

In other words, the SEC is better for y'all than the "burning building" that is the Big XII but wouldn't the B1G be ideal for Mizzou?

We're in the middle of both. The SEC fans think we're too northern and the B1G fans think we're inbred hicks. I think either would be a nice fit, but who knows what's going to happen.

I think we definitely are a more logical fit in the B1G with natural rivalries with Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois. But if they don't want us and decide to go east, I think we can definitely bring a lot to the table for the SEC. Our fan base is fixed on joining you guys though.
