I'm just defending what I believe is in the best interest of the SEC but thank you.

But arguments like this build so much credibility...
@ 777: I appreciate your zeal in proclaiming your economic/media market gospel. I just contend that it is not the market area alone the generates vast piles of revenue - it is the product. The SEC is synonymous for college football excellence - no, maybe more - college football dominance. We provide highly ranked teams that win in marquee matchups on a consistent basis. That is what causes televisions to tune us in across the nation. Whatever team we may expand to in #14, it had better first fill that one profile or it's not a winner out there in television-land. I think WVU can provide that kind of football and that kind of insane fan base. I don't think they are the only ones who can do that for the SEC. But I have been working on the model that the ACC is off-limits, so I've pretty much focused on the two most likely candidates - Mizzou and WVU. Mizzou wins the television market sweepstakes in terms of numbers, hands down. No doubt. I understand that. However, WVU wins the exciting team, exciting fanbase, winning image that you want to watch on television hands down (IMO).
Call me crazy, but when I think about watching Mizzou, I think: "dull, vanilla, and boring; ho-hum. I think I'll go play on my computer." And I have tried to watch them play in games before I even thought they might be a candidate for the SEC. I couldn't.
When I think about watching WVU, I think: "Hey, this crazy team could really do something out there in (name your stadium or game). I want to watch." And before they ever played LSU or sounded like they might be an SEC candidate, I did watch them.
Do you suppose the network/marketing people who put together these vast $$$$$$$$ contracts take things like that into consideration when they try to evaluate market share potential? I believe they do. You say no, it's just the numbers within a particular team or conference's viewing area.
Clearly @ General13 and 777: we differ. But I guess we'll each just have to wait and see. Regardless, I have enjoyed our jousting on this topic.
Oh, and when LSU plays Bama and Coach $$$$$...

me too. Im trying to think big picture long term and everytime I bring up numbers people get pissed especially WVU fans and just say I hate WVU without refuting anything I say.
people are failing to understand how a future SEC network will pay for itself. B1G network get .85 for subscribers in market and only .15 for those out of market.
People subscribing dont have to be fans. It is just tiered with things like NFL network, EspnU, cbs sports etc etc. I know I get B1G network and I didnt ask for it. Direct tv just gives it to me.
Same would work with a SEC network. Its retarded how WVU bring up merchandise sales. WHO GIVES A FLYING frick?!!! Bottomline IMO you can even bring in 31 million per year the way everything is setup now. Thats the amount it would take for every SEC school to make an additional 1 million per year which isnt shite with the extra expenses occured. Maybe Im wrong but TV rating show that Im prolly not.
If WVU cant do that and they offer nothing in terms of revenue from a future SEC network then what is the point of adding them? Nobody has been able to answer these questions.

Agreed. I'm sure the decision makers feel the same otherwise we would have completed the expansion process already.
To Tigar: As far as product is concerned, the SEC brand isn't gaining anything by adding Mizzou or WVU. The SEC product will be superior as long as LSU, Bama, Au, UF, UGA, Arkie, Tenn etc keep dominating the college football landscape and continue to win Bcs games. Pure speculation on my part but I don't believe WV would come in and compete for a BCS bid out of the SEC. So it stands to reason that if we can't add to the brand or add to market share than why add?
Mizzou adds quite a bit of market share and would greatly increase future earnings. They may not come in and compete immediately but they have the recruiting area and money to grow in the future much like A&M. I think it will be beneficial to all members of the SEC.

this is my opinion too. I dont think either team adds much in terms of prestige to the overall conference. Thats why I want to go after UM over WVU if no ACC team is coming. Overall I think UM has more potential too. They have more money and are in a better place geography wise to take advantage of a move to the SEC recruiting wise. Plus they are a natural rival to Ar-Kansas which WVU has no exsisting natural rival in the SEC.
Its been fun discussing this, no matter who ends up being right.

WHY do you assume the SEC absorbs any buy-out ???
The SEC is the party that has something others WANT...not the other way around !

it was a worst case scenerio. I dont automatically assume the SEC takes the full 20 million buyout, just showing how easy of a decision it would be if it came to that.

UK and Tenn right of the bat

If a move is made soon, WVU and the Big East have a back out clause. Since two teams have chosen to leave the conference, there can be a vote to the conference and teams that want out (vote to dissolve) can leave without the 27 month wait, and without the 20 million buyout. This would be in the interest of the ACC, Pitt, Syracuse, and possibly WVU, UConn, and Rutgers.
You are making a ton of assumptions. 1) There would still be 5 Big East teams left scrambling. UConn and Rutgers may try and get into the ACC, but that is yet to be seen if they'll even be accepted.
Furthermore, you are telling me the remaining 5 BE teams are going to give up their automatic BCS bid? If they can hold onto the $18 Million guaranteed they will get a portion of by holding WVU, Pitt, and Syracuse hostage by the 27 month clause, you bet your arse they will. It will also give them time to do a legitimate search for replacements and not lose their automatic BCS bid.
So no, the out isn't so easy.

Uk maybe because of basketball.
excuse my ignorance here but how many times has WVU played UT and UK?
Not trying to be a smartass I just didnt know an existing rivalry was already in place there. I realize UK would become a rival quickly but I didnt know one was already there.

Never played Tennessee in football, and 8-11-1 against UK, last meeting was 1983. It would be an instant rivalry because of location.

yea just like LSU arky right? Location is only one factor. Btw I was being sarcastic about lsu-arky, its a forced rivalry that has never really materialized

Mostly speculation that you posted, and the Pittsburgh market (WVU stuff is all over Fox Sports Pittsburgh) is a fairly good sized market. Missouri hardly pulls any tv audience as it is, even with the bigger market, so you really wouldn't be expanding much. Mizzous fan base isn't much larger than WVU's (there is a link here somewhere, too lazy to find it while at work, it shows Mizzous fanbase is barely 100,000 more people) yet the market is like 10 times bigger.
But Mizzou's endowment is 2x WVU's.lol. They love their school and put money into that school.
