I know this probably has been talked about already, but I never start new topics, so

I know the defense has sucked, but remember a shot time ago when Bo came to LSU and our defense looked horrible against ASU and the second half of UT??

Don't ya'll think we are jumping the gun, on this new DC stuff? Are we running a different defensive scheme?

Supposedly the scheme is not that much different.
The two main problems I see is
-confusion on the part of the coaching staff getting plays in and thus confusion by the players.
- It also seems that the def. line and linebackers are being taught more of a read and react style and thus are sitting on their heals letting plays come to them.

yeah, I agree with that, but that should get better with time, right?

I have noticed that we don't blitz near as much as we used to.

The D has been on a slow decline since Miles took over. This year it was a tumble.

They say it's the same scheme, I say I didn't like that scheme anyway.

Hawkins admited to the change

Yet according to Hawkins, some problems in the defensive secondary are a result of getting acclimated with a new defensive coaching staff, with defensive coordinator Bo Pelini having left for Nebraska in the offseason.

"For the older guys like me who have been around awhile there's a bit of confusion from the old (defensive coaching) staff," Hawkins said. "But we don't need to change the defense any. We just need to build on it and make it better."

see, thats the only thing that I don't really understand, both of these guys were around when Pelini was here, why are they changing the defense??

we have always had a top ranked defense with Pelini, so why change what they learned from him??

One of the biggest problems. Regardless of whether we blitz more or not we have to start attacking the football. We need less reading and faster reacting.

Because they were touched when they were young.

Oh brother! Doesn't that sound like Tepper's philosphy? That was the single worst defense that LSU has ever had, those 2 years under him. I hope this one is very different, although the result last week was certainly familiar.

For whatever reason we have reduced our blitzing dating back to last year. The lack of blitzing was the main reason for the lost to both KY and AR. last year. It might be that the staff is afraid to leave our corners on an island, but until we get back to confusing offenses with multiple looks things won't change much. This years d line is not getting press when we rush 4 or 5, and this dates back to last year when both Dorsey and Alexander both went down to injury. Saban and Al. are getting defensive recognition because of all their blitz packages, and they are running a 3 - 4 defense, and I really don't believe their talent is as good as ours. I will agree that all the young d backs may have been an issue, and the new co-coord. may have been a problem, but we have 5 games under the belt, and you know what excuses are like.

There are 2 reasons the D looks bad this year.
1-No Dorsey. The D-line doesn't have a dominant player that needs two guys to block him allowing others to make the tackle.
2-Inexperienced dbs. If the dbs can't cover man to man, noway does LSU blitz. It is obvious they aren't good enough yet to be trusted in man to man coverage.

note that the 2 guys who graduated last year were the final remnants of the DBs who were tutored by Saban. IMO Saban to Mallory as a DB coach is a HUGE step down.

And the read-and-react thing is a red herring. All defenses read and react. Saban's defenses probably had some of the more complex reads used in college football. The difference is in aggressive play calling. Read-and-react is not mutually exclusive with aggressive defense.
