Despite knowing better and Vacation being one of my favorite Movies we decided to drive with my teenagers from Austin Texas to San Francisco and then take the PCH down to San Diego then back. i guess this will take 2 weeks or so. if anyone has any ideas of cool places to stop etc along the way best routes etc please let me know. (And yes I know how freaking stupid this is, and instead of going to Europe like I wanted I get to drive 2000 miles with a broken leg. )

Anything anyone knows to make this less miserable please post it here.

I would avoid San Francisco

But in all seriousness, if you’re driving I-40 you’re not far from many things along the route.

Albuquerque
Flagstaff is a cool city
Some of Route 66
Grand Canyon
Meteor Crater
Hoover Dam
Vegas
Death Valley NP
Sequoia National Forest
Yosemite NP
Incredible hiking in the Sierra Nevada

On the way back I-10 is pretty desolate, but you’ll come across some interesting stuff. Best thing to do in my opinion is to have a “plan” each day, but build in time for random stops.

I suggest moving from Austin and never going to San Francisco.

My friend moved to a place near SF about 15 years ago. Drove the car from BR to SF. Said it was a horrible drive

Winslow, Az. if you are an Eagles fan. It is right off of I40. Williams, Az take the train to the Grand Canyon, day trip. PCH is wonderful. Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Monica Pier is where Route 66 ends/begins,Hearst Castle and so much more. Coronado Island in San Diego
and visit Hotel del Coronado for lunch. Do as much research as possible for this once in a lifetime trip and make those memories.

Take US 50 across Nevada. Loneliest Highway in America. Good views across the great basin.

Or cut north on 395 to see the rugged Seirra Nevadas. If you have the time, take 395 all the way Lake Tahoe and spend a day or two there.

I've done the trip solo and w/ family 5 times... perfer flying now.

0x15e makes a good point. There are lots of things for families with teens to see/do between Austin & SF. I-10 & I-40 are fast truck roads not built with sightseeing in mind. Find some interesting side trips. I especially liked stumbling onto the Very Large Array west of Socorro NM ( LINK

Be advised that Austin to Carlsbad NM can be pretty boring.

Don't skip San Francisco, but stay south of the city and take commuter trains in and out. Use Uber, Lyft, Flywheel, BART, MUNI etc in the city. Golden Gate Park and it's museums are a good destination.
