I’ll be in northern Italy for about a week and a half mid October. We are all flying into Milan and staying a couple hours outside of there. We are planning a two day trip to Monaco to visit some places.

Any places recommend to visit within an hour or so of Milan? Any extra places we should visit in Monaco? We are looking for mostly food and scenery.

I love the alps in particular. I’ve seen them once.

You like the Alps? Go to the Dolomites in northern Italy. The scenery is spectacular.

Go to the Lake Region. Lake Como is beautiful. Twice we stayed in Lugano, Switzerland which is on Lake Lugano just across the lake from Italy and about a 30 minute drive from Lake Como.

The lake closest to Milan in Lake Maggiore. Go to Stressa and take the ferry for the short ride to the Borromeo Palace on an island just offshore. That is the easiest thing to do from Milan.

Monaco-
Nice is nice and is not far away.
Villefranche Sur Mer and Beaulieu Sur Mer are two picturesque towns near there, but I really recommend a visit to Eze. Eze is a quaint hilltown. There is one main pedestrian street that goes up the hill and at the top is a park with outstanding views of the Mediterranean.

Lake Como is the obvious answer for a reason. We stayed at Vernazza and loved it. Great access by train from Milan and from there you can a see a number of other places on the lake by boat.

I would also like to have see the Swiss lake across the boarder but we didn’t have time or a car.

Verona is a nice little city. There is a Roman arena that is still used as a concert/opera venue. Most of the outer ring has fallen but the remaining structure is really interesting.

Sorry. Meant Varenna, though Vernazza was also very enjoyable.

Sirmione on Lake Garda is really nice. Out on a peninsula and you can get boats around the lake.

Do it. We went a while back and it was incredible. We got very lucky and happened to be there right in the middle of their annual truffle festival.

I went backpacking in Italy for 3 weeks and spent 3 or 4 nights in Piedmont before going to cinque terra. We did wine tours in barolo, barberra, asti, alba I think. We took a hot air air balloon to 10,000 feet in the valley at base of alps. Hiked to a mountain hut in the alps called rifugio questa around cuneiform and spent the night. They chopper the supplies in and cook you homemade dinner… then you wake up the next day and keep hiking. I really want to go back and do that again one day
