So one of my wife’s sisters (no pics of wife or sister) is paying for a big family trip to Hawaii this month. Recommendations on must see or must do things while we are there? Planning to play golf, snorkel, visit Pearl Harbor, and hopefully take a fishing trip. What are things we MUST do while there? We are staying on the big island. I think around Kona coast?

Well you can cross Pearl Harbor off the list. Different island.

Many great beaches north of Kona. Some of the best ones are off the beaten path, which is why I recommend buying the book “Hawaii: The Big Island revealed,” as it gives great information on how to access them. Buy the book, you won’t regret it as it covers everything.

Visit a coffee plantation (I like Greenwell Farms) and do the chocolate tour at “Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory.” They grow the cacao there and harvest every few weeks year round.

Hawaii Volcanoes Natl. Park is great as Kilauea is currently erupting. It’s a long ways from Kona, but worth it. Also on the other side of the island near Hilo are Akaka Falls and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.

Drive to the summit of Mauna Kea (over 13,000 feet tall!).

South Point and green sands beach. Research before doing as it requires great 4WD or hike to get to beach.

Go to the Natl. Historic Park across the highway from Costco to see sea turtles.

Eat Huli chicken. There are two great ones. One in Captain Cook ( Randy’s) which is open a couple of weekdays and another at the parking lot of the Waimea liquor store on weekends.

Big island is lots of fun.
Snorkel two step

Drive over volcano during day to visit Hilo

Jump off cliff at south point

See green sands beach

Night snorkel trip to view Manta Rays (1 of only places in world)

Going to bump this. Going next March. Plan on doing the manta ray, Mauna Kea, volcano national park, green beach plus all the great snorkeling spots. What about zip lining?
