2024 20th Anniversary Recommendations
Posted on 7/7/23 at 1:54 pm

Starting to think about where to go for our 20th, and would like some recommendations.
We'd like somewhere international but within an 8 hour flight. We're taking the kids with us, so it can't be an adults only location. Probably looking at 10 days or so.
Personally, I'd like somewhere a little unique, i.e., not London & Paris.
Some initial ideas:
* Spain & Portugal (Maderia, maybe?)
* Scandinavia
* Eastern Europe (Prague/Budapest and/or Crotaia)
* Costa Rica
* Belize
Thanks!

I'm not sure I would do Spain and Portugal in 10 days. You can do Barcelona-Seville-Madrid and that would take 10 days. And those places would have decent things to do with kids although it tends to be a late night culture. If Madrid doesn't interest you (and personally its not my favorite outside of the 2 great museums), then slip in Porto or Lisbon as well maybe?
The kids would likely LOVE Rome-Florence-Venice with maybe Cinque Terre thrown in between Florence and Venice.
Prague is on the romantic side of things so that feels like a you and wife trip imo

Yeah 10 days May not be enough to see most of Spain and Portugal. No issue dropping Madrid. I wouldn’t hate seeing Gibraltar but not sure it worth it.
Hadn’t considered Argentina. I’ll look it up!
Kids may like Italy but we’ve been before and would like to go somewhere new.

I'd daytrip to Ronda before I'd go to Gibraltor.

There’s a lot of stuff in Spain that may blow the kids minds.
Alhambra is of course amazing. Cordoba. Ronda. Toledo.
Barcelona’s old quarter is cool. And they have a great beach!

Go to Spain. Fly into Barcelona. You could spend ten days in Barcelona and go up and down the the costa del Sol for a few day trips. Or head to Seville or Granada.

I’d do at least a couple days in Seville/Andalucia. It’s so different.
Do a rooftop tour of the Gothic Cathedral. A stunning experience.

Great ideas. Surprised Spain has such a majority of recommendations over the others.
Never heard of Ronda, but it looks incredible

Loved Sevilla. Really was surprised by how much I liked it. Moved to the top of my list of Spanish cities.

Standard key questions. Budget. Time of year (seasonal pricing variations can be huge based upon where you want to go and when. We always like to go to Europe in the offseason for example, typically late November). How many travelers. Age of kids? Main airport you'd fly out of (Virginia..Dulles?) You willing to fly more than 8 hours? (Where you fly out of and destination is key. Factoring in connecting flights and potential layovers, which could be several hours, that might exclude some European destinations. Play around with aggregator sites like Kayak to get a feel for actual costs and durations). Etc.
Reason a budget is so important, for example, is you ain't doing
Based upon the kid's ages, and interests, and how they'd travel, I'd look for parts of the world that aren't hard to get to per se.
I guess an obvious question would be why not a family oriented All Inclusive in the Carribean?
Potential Options?
Turks and Caicos wasn't my favorite island. Kind of flat and arrid. BUT, the beaches and water are spectacular! I didn't stay at Beaches but some here have and for a family, that'd be a nice choice. Kind of expensive, but so is the whole island.
I've been to Belize. That would be a good choice. Ruins. Snorkleing. Great seafood. Fairly safe and affordable. We stayed in some huts on Glover's Reef. Talk about an unique experience!
Just got back from Portual. Doable flight wise. Fairly cheap country. Wasn't my favorite country I've visited, but I could see that as a choice. Article.
The countries of Eastern Europe are by far my favorite that I've visited. Would be outside of your flight hours, BUT, if you're will to fly a little more you'd be rewarded bigly. So much to see and do. And generally CHEAP! I temper my thoughts of what I'd do, vs. what I'd do with younger kids. Prague is my favorite city in the whole world. Go visit Ceský Krumlov. Really cool. Slovenia is my favorite country overall in the whole world! I've spent time in Croatia and feel like there'd be enough feedback here on a trip there. You'd want to focus on the coastal parts overall, but make sure to go to Plitvice National Park.
Again, with kids...Don't underestimate them whining about everything and what that'd do for an Anniversary vibe.
Keep it simple and fun to me!

An expensive part of the world, BUT it's among my favorites. Beautiful scenery. Great food. Friendly people (most of who speak English).
* Scandinavia

Great info and advice! I should have provided that basic info upfront.
Budget: $8k all in. Lower the better, obviously.
Time of year: flexible. Likely in the shoulder season of wherever we choose so likely fall. Crowds ruin it for us.
Travelers: 4. Kids will be 16 and 11 at time of travel. Already have passports.
Typically fly out of Richmond. Could easily fly out of Dulles, BWI, etc.
Flight time: Flying sucks. Shorter the better. Thank GOD for pharmaceuticals. I'd say 10 is the max.
Yeah, Eastern Europe looks really cool and seems more "exotic" for whatever that's worth. Don't know much about it other than pretty beaches and Slovenia has the Alps too.
I've heard the beaches are great, but just to go to the Caribbean if you want the beach. We like the beach, but aren't ones to lounge around.
And yes, I can already hear, "but what are we going to doooooo?"
Thanks again.

Same, Sevilla is cool as hell.
And its relatively close to places like Alhambra and Cordoba

Sevilla is a great city and it's a good place to do a day trip from to Ronda or Gibraltor. We stayed on the river close to the bull fighting arena. It's a great district of the city with the castle and gardens close enough to walk to.

Good updates. FYI, I posted the below in another thread but our trip to Normandy was among the best. Touring the D-Day Beaches at that age would be quite the moving experience!
We did a Viking River Cruise last November starting in Paris.
Later rented a car and drove back to Normandy. Touring Normandy after our Seine River cruise for a week was magical. One of the best trips we ever took.
We based in Bayeux. Stayed in the Le Grand Hôtel du Luxembourg. Nice accommodations. Reasonably priced. Centrally located. Great town with lots of restaurants, shopping, wine stores etc. Very nice cathedral.
Day trips to Pointe du Hoc, the museums at Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Caen. The bunkers at Longues-sur-Mer were truly amazing to see.
German Batteries
5 Must See Sites In Normandy
Normandy Bunkers
Drove 2 1/2 hours to Mont Saint Michel, a true bucket list location. On the way back, went to the gorgeous seaside town of Honfleur.
A week minimum is truly needed to see this amazing part of France in my book.

Taking the high speed rail from Rome to Florence to Bologna to Venice was hard to beat for our honeymoon. Did a final day in England to visit family before heading home.

Started putting pen to paper. We would enjoy a lot of these trips and could find interactive things for the kids to do. We went lobstering in Maine, for example, and they enjoyed that. Sure there are things like that in Spain and abroad.
Have to say though, Costa Rica looks easy. Volcanoes, snorkeling, zip lining, waterfalls. Not sure if they have any ruins there for me to get my history fix but pretty place.
