Post-Rain Lawn Dead Spots - How to handle?

My lawn in Prairieville has finally been gifted 1.7" of rain over the past 3 days. My front yard seems to be a mix of centipede and St. Augustine trying to overtake it in areas. Despite my best efforts at watering, I have large marbled areas of brown dead grass.
These areas seem very dead with complete stolon carcasses lifting up if I try. Small tufts mixed in of live grass. Given somewhat limited time left in our growing season, what is the best method to fill in?
Leave it be?
Rake out the dead crap?
Cover with mason sand or peat moss?

I'm just leaving mine and see how it performs or not.
I sure don't want September bearing down on new sod.

I'm mostly curious if those patches of dead are a hinderance to fresh growth. Would removing the rotten thatchy stuff and replacing with a different medium (sand/soil?) encourage filling in

I normally rake the dead out. But right now it may be providing some shade and mulch for the stuff still alive. Maybe remove some but not all?

Seems like I remember sand encouraging lateral spreading but I don’t remember if that is accurate or species specific
