I'm traveling to Bozeman, MT for 2 to 2.5 days in the coming week (Thursday - Sunday) and looking for any board recommendations on what to try to capitalize on in the short visit. We would like to do some sight seeing but also relax a bit and enjoy good food (I could go for some bison or elk). I'm also considering going to Montana State's homecoming game or at least visiting campus to check out the tailgate scene. We're not planning to go on any major hikes or do any camping, but we'll have a rental car and certainly want to see some beautiful country.

I appreciate any recommendations from the board.

Food: Open Range (steakhouse) would be my choice for your game desire. If price isn't an issue at all, get a reservation at Horn & Cantle in Big Sky (~45 min drive, you get to see some incredible scenery on the way down). Stacey's in Gallatin Gateway has damn good steaks, too, and I think they have bison on the menu. Really cool old cowboy bar built back in the 30's.

If you do that, there are several easy hikes along the way or in Big Sky. I'd highly suggest Ousel Falls in Big Sky and Hell Roaring Creek in the Gallatin Canyon. If you want to stay closer to Bozeman and see great views without much of a hike, I'd suggest Fairy Lake.

To do: Museum of the Rockies is close to the MSU campus and is really nice you like natural science museums. Awesome dinosaur exhibition.

If you are into beer, Mountains Walking has great beer, and good food.

Wake up early one of your days and drive through Paradise Valley, and go into Yellowstone. Stunning scenery through there. Carry bear spray if you hike though.

If you don't want to go all the way to Yellowstone, check out Tom Miner basin. Good chance at seeing a grizzly, and other wildlife. The leaves will be starting to turn too. Best time of the year to go.

You could make a day just going to breweries and distilleries. The pizza at Bridger Brewing is fantastic.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll pitch it to my wife, but I am going to plan to eat at least at one of the spots you recommended. The menus for all three look very good. I appreciate the other suggestions for to dos. I might ask more questions about your sight-seeing recommendations when I get some time to research them further.

Bridger Brewing looks like a great spot to check out either before or after the game. I like that they sell pizza by the slice during the day. Looks very good to me. Thanks for the suggestion

As much as I would like to go to Yellowstone, I think that is going to have to be a trip of its own. Thanks for the recommendation on Tom Miner Basin. It's not too far distance-wise and yes I am all about seeing some wildlife. Definitely excited to be in the area this time of year. Every time I've traveled out west it has been during the summer time. This will be a change for me.

It's still fairly warm in the day (probably up to low 80s in Bozeman), but nights and mornings are getting pretty crisp, so I'd suggest a light to medium jacket, especially since you're probably not used to it. I think we are supposed to get snow on Lone Peak tonight!

Got back earlier this month and am going to give you a few non-standard places to see.
See the Museum of the Rockies mentioned already. When I was there, there was a DaVinci exhibit with reproductions of his inventions at full scale.
Nearby, is the Museum of Robotics and Computers. Off beat but very educational.
If you want to see a real ghost town, visit Bannack State park. Very little has changed of been restored since the town was abandoned. Quite interesting.
On the way to Bannack SP, we happened upon Madison Buffalo Jump. If interested you can see how native people hunted bison.

We saw a good deal more, but you wouldn't have time to do Montana justice. I know we didn't and plan to return eothin a few years.

I went over the summer and did some fly-fishing, and would highly recommend looking into that. I'm not sure if late September is the right time. The river that runs through this area is where A River Runs Through It was filmed.

I have been in Bozeman and surrounding area for the past week. If I have two days, the first day I’m driving down the Madison Valley through Ennis and down to Westfork area. The scenery is absolutely beautiful and the topography is crazy due to glaciers carving the earth millions of years ago.

The. Other day I would stay in town. Downtown has grown immensely and there are many shops and restaurants. Most all have some bison options. MSU Campus is beautiful and a game would be fun but I am not sure of the tailgate scene. I’d imagine it is not what you are used to in the south.

I really didn’t eat out much as I was staying with friends and camping. We cooked a good deal.

Thank you all for the additional responses. Our plan right is in line with your suggestion as far as doing sight-seeing Friday and staying around Bozeman on Saturday. We still haven't made up our minds on where we will drive around Friday. Simply put, 2 days is going to be a tease in the end, but I am excited about the trip.

I'd go Bozeman to Ennis to Cliff Lake. Then to Hegben Lake/West Yellowstone and back up 191 through Bigsky. Plenty to see and do along that route and if you are running early, you may have time to duck into the Park.

Downtown Bozeman is great; Tory McPhail, of Commander’s Palace fame, moved out there and owns a few restaurants and they’re all pretty good. If weather is good, I would drive to Livingston one day and explore the downtown and then head south through the Paradise Valley. Beautiful drive/views. Stop at the Old Saloon for a drink and snack.

You could go towards Livingston then south and see Paradise valley, then hit Old Saloon for some live music at night.

We made it to Bozeman around noon today. We checked out Main street and ate at Backcountry Burger Bar for lunch. Since it was a little late in the day to travel far we did trek over to Livingston and drove a ways through Paradise Valley. Very pretty scenery with the river and mountains. We snuck in a stop at the Montana Grizzly Encounter to ensure we saw a grizzly bear as well. Ended up eating at Gil's Goods for dinner in Livingston. Then drove back through Montana State's campus on the way back to our rental. Saw some very nice whitetail bucks and plenty more deer on the way back.

I'm planning to take a good bit of the feedback from here to trek south tomorrow towards Big Sky and Yellowstone. I think we will log several hours on the road but we'll see some great scenery. Hoping to get back in time for dinner at Open Range. Still planning out Saturday but we are leaning towards it being an all day affair in Bozeman.

All-in-all it has been a wonderful start to the trip and the board's feedback has been much appreciated.
