Late election for LA form R6980?

Does anyone know if there is a late election exclusion for for form R6980 Pass Through Entity Tax Election? We're an S Corp in Georgia who did working LA. We filed an LA Corp return and paid the taxes of the shareholders with the LA Corp Return. However, LA wrote back saying our election to do so was not valid since we never mailed in form R6980. Any thoughts?
