My fiance and I are going to the game, but I want a good, cheap, but most of all SAFE hotel close to the georgia dome.
Any suggestions from those who have been there often?

There's not too much right near it since its an Airport Hotel but the Hilton Airport is a good hotel and had cheap rooms.

This is a new place, but the location is fantastic for the area. I saw if for $149/night on sidestep.com.
Glenn Hotel
In general, I'd otherwise try to be closer to Peachtree Center (might use the MARTA station as a reference point). If you're really looking to go cheaper, but still somewhat convenient, look near any of the MARTA stations going up the North and Northeast lines. The nicer areas would be near the Lenox/Buckhead stations or Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. If you're in close walking distance to MARTA, then it's relatively easy getting around.

I stayed in buckhead last year and it was pretty convenient. MARTA brings you almost right to the entrance of the Dome.

It just depends on what you want to do.
There are tons of bars, restaurants, strip clubs, etc. I haven't really been out much in downtown Atlanta in a long time. When LSU is in town, we usually just setup a tailgate by the Dome and party like we're in Baton Rouge.
For those that are interested in where most of the tailgating is, take MARTA to the Georgia Dome. When you come out right in front of the Dome, look to your left. That's where a ton of LSU fans setup.
On game day, those that don't tailgate will usually hole-up in a sports bar somewhere to drink and eat (particularly if it's really cold).

We've always ended up at the fan fest as well. Very easy to drink and stay warm...

If you stay in Buckhead or Midtown, you'll have access to nicer places, but you won't be around LSU fans because they all stay downtown. I would recommend the Sheraton, Marriott Marquis, or Westin downtown. I live in Atl, but usually get a room downtown for the SECCG because I want to be closer to the LSU fans.
After the game, most LSU fans end of at Gibney's, an Irish pub downtown right next to the Marriot Marquis and Sheraton. Not the greatest place, but pretty fun when packed with purple and gold.

The Marriott Marquis is the best, close to Dome and the most teriffic little bar right across the street. That bar becomes LSU headquarters when we are in town. The Renaissance is also a very fine hotel, walk to the Marta and it stops right AT the dome.

My favorite too. However, that will be GT's headquarters. LSU will be staying at the Hilton.

you can't go wrong with the Westin Downtown.
Great hotel, great location.

I signed up just to pass this message along.
Think carefully where you are staying, and how to get back to the hotel after the game. It is New Year's Eve, so downtown will be busy anyways. Throw in the Peach Bowl (71,000 people) and a Lil Wayne concert immediately next door to the Dome (another 20,000 people), riding Marta might not be feasible.
