Older Calcutta drag question

I switched from 12lb fluorocarbon to 30lb braided line. Throws awesome. But my drag doesn’t have the resistance that I remember. I can tighten the drag down all the way, but I can still pull it pretty easy. It does get more resistance when it’s tight, but I can still pull it easier than it should it seems. Will too much line on a spool cause that maybe? I stringed it pretty full. Just curious if it may be too much.

Let me add it’s a 200 series. It’s one of the smaller ones.

Have you ever changed the drag discs on it?

I haven’t. I sent it off for a good cleaning and service. It’s my Grandaddy’s old reel and wanted it done professionally. It throws so much better. The drag just seems weaker. Not sure if they did that. I will ask them next week.

Did you put backing on the spool before adding the braid? If you didn’t, that’s your problem more than likely.

They can throw new carbon drag discs in for cheap. Maybe an extra 10-15

Sounds like it may not actually be the drag then, but all that loose braid cinching down at first.

Thanks everyone. I’m gonna try backing and see if that works. I clearly see the spool turning when the drag is all the way locked down. Could that still be the braid clinching? Sorry for all the questions. I’ve never used braided line before.

Thanks so much, fellas! I didn’t understand the backing thing. Again, I’m new to braided line and probably sounded dumb. Watched a video, added 100 yards of 8lb mono then tied on and filled the other half with the 30lb braid. No more slipping. That was it. Y’all are awesome.

Stupid question on my part but how did you attach the braid to the spool? Briad will slip no matter what you do unless you start with some mono or something to get the line going on the spool. I am sure you did not just tie the braid to the spool but I have done it before and it would reel in line fine but the smallest amount of tension and the entire length of line would slip on the spool.

I've done it before. Blew my mind.
I stripped 2 of my Penn 9/0s with electra mates on them this weekend in prep for a deep drop trip this week. I used a half inch milwaukee drill motor and a 18 inch bit extension. spun the line off in seconds....and simply slid it off the slick bit extension. Braid is SLICK.

I tied it directly to the spool. Again, I didn’t know. But it’s not like it just started spinning freely. I had to pull it with my hand. But now with the backing, it takes way more effort when I’m testing the drag.
