Further then you may want to go but how about a trip to Tunica Hills in Pond Mississippi?
Walking the creeks, cooling off in the waterfall pools and also looking for cool rocks.
May even find a piece of petrified wood.
Or a Wooly Mammoth!!

Not much further they have some pretty cool trails in the Homochitto NF as well. I found a piece of crystal that had been rolled smooth in Mccall Creek. I thought it was cool as a kid and still think it's pretty cool.

Abita River. You can access it near the park at the trailhead (behind the Brew Pub). When the water level is low (like it is now) you can walk in it for a while and explore. Watch out for yellow flies, though.

When I was a kid (about 60 years ago), my Dad used to take us to Goodbe. There were HUGE piles of rocks there on the side of the road. I used to hunt through those piles for hours. Found quite a few gorgeous agates. I could have stayed out there for weeks.
