In the infamous property right off I-10 that has been at least six other restaurants in as many years. Their sign is up, is the restaurant actually open?

Ya know, I was wondering the same thing. Looks like a LOT of Hood fans on the roof, prob about half as many as parking spots. Hope this place doesn't make the 7th.
Does anyone know if they have a good bunch of people running it? I'd like to try it out, but always end up at Ichibans if I've made it to essen already.

I thought I read the new owners own another successful restaurant or two in BR. Can't remember for sure though.

In Japanese, the word “Sakura” means lush cherry-blossom trees. In Baton Rouge, the owners hope it becomes synonymous with sushi and steak. Settling into the building that formerly housed Vincent’s on Essen Lane at Interstate 10, owner Guang Ming Lin hopes to open this high-end eatery by the end of the month. Along with a menu chockfull of Chinese and Thai selections, Sakura brought in a veteran New York chef, and he installed six hot plates for cooks to dazzle customers with their culinary abilities.

japanese, sushi, steak, thai, and chinese.
maybe toss in some pizza, chicken wings, green jello, and cookies with almonds why he's at it.
i wish more places would just focus on fewer things, and do them well.

That place is restaurant hell. Why idiots keep insisting on opening places in there is beyond me.
They should just light their money on fire.

Then you'd have Great Wall.

The place was for sale as of spring 2008 for $1.2 mil, I hope they have deep arse pockets.

Went to Sakura Sushi today, had several of the more simple sushi rolls. The sushi is good, the prices are reasonable. It's no Ichiban, but it seems like a nice little place for lunch.
One thing that they get kudos for is the hibachi chef that I got to see hamming it up for a table of people, funny guy with lots of attitude (his name is Sapporo, definitely someone you'd want to book in advance). Ichiban laid off some of their better hibachi chefs over the last few months; the last hibachi chef I saw a week ago looked about as enthusiastic as a DMV employee.
The staff (mostly Chinese) is all very friendly, the owner is presently leasing. Spoke to him for a while, unfortunately he wasn't aware of how many restaurants had preceded his in that location. The place was fairly empty for a Saturday, but something to be optimistic about is that there's a brand new hotel opening right next door (Drury Inn & Suites). Sakura has been open for five days, feel free to stop by and try it for yourself.

Got to eat there again.
Had the rainbow roll (whitefish, tuna, salmon, avocado on top of a california roll), and was pretty pleased. Also had the steamed gyoza (pork dumplings), which were good. Got a free side of pork from the kitchen, which was great. Their main two chefs are a Chinese and Japanese guys, if you're looking for good sitdown Chinese and not a buffet, this looks to be a good place.
The sushi chef (Jeff) is the guy that they brought in from New York, he will randomly give people at the sushi bar or hibachi tables free sides like pork or fish. Both of the owners are really nice guys, as are the rest of the waitstaff, I had the chance to speak to all of them. It was dead save for the hibachi tables, I hope they get more business.

this location is a death trap for restaurants. they can put 20 hotels next to it and it will still suck and close.

I brought the family there today and everyone loved it. Everything was excellent and so were the prices. Since they are still doing a grand opening thing they are throwing in free or extra stuff sometimes as well. I would recommend it.

Took my wife there tonight. Got there at 6:45, and there were 3 other sets of diners, and all were sitting at the Hibachi table. They were on their way out. We sat at the Hibachi table, for a solid 20 minutes, we were the only customers -- 7:00 on a Friday night. As our meal was coming to a close, a few more customers rolled in.
Kind of a shame. The food and service were both good. We had Sapporo as our Hibachi cook, and he was decent, better than the ichiban cooks.
I tried an Eel avocado roll, which was also pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't see it to better or worse than the already established Ichiban, which is but a few seconds away. Maybe the Chinese dishes will set them apart, but I just don't think it's going to last. Too many sushi places in BR now. Maybe they should advertise in Tiger Weekly (though they are probably a little too far away from campus to be successful with that)

Actually Louisiana Pizza Kitchen was there for a good while before moving to Corporate. Having said that, I think it needs to be something unique to draw peeps over there and another sushi place might not be the bill. Good luck to them anyway....

They opened Dec. 22 and are now celebrating their Grand Opening Month. Ads in the Advocate and the radio. The food is incredible. Upscale feel with the white linen tableclothes. Prices dont reflect it though. Cheaper than Ichiban!
Great place to bring a date or family. I will be back!
