I was mentioning to my wife a few weeks ago that I was shocked that there wasn't some manner of expose series on the boot camp training programs that are in Seoul where HYBE churns out K-pop girl and boy groups. (BTS & BlackPink are the only 2 I could name).

She said that she'd just seen a trailer for a documentary series on Netflix called Pop Star Academy, where they were doing global casting calls for a new girl group. Knowing what sort of sordid things I've read about on Crazy Days & Nights that allegedly go down behind the scenes at HYBE, we watched the first episode, and it's inexplicably compelling.

They take almost 2 dozen girls and put them in a house in LA while they go through a Korean-style Training & Development program in the quest to land one of 6 final spots in a new global girl group. There isn't some of the more seedy goings on like CDAN has revealed about other groups, but there's a case to be made that the folks at the top of the food chain at HYBE & Geffen Records are straight up evil with the way they do these girls.

My wife was watching this the other day. I watched maybe ten minutes, most of the girls were talented. She likes K-Pop, K-Dramas, BTS, etc. My taste is Babymetal personally. Most of the stuff she watches seems better than 95% of the crap out there. Watch the NSYNC doc they have up. Same shite, different era.

It really goes a long way to underscore chatter that's been around for decades re: executive influence overriding fan votes on shows like American Idol, etc.

The final lineup of the group has debuted, so it's out there for anyone who wants to see where they end up personnel-wise.

Out of 6 spots, I absolutely detested 2 of the girls. One would routinely skip out on practice, and another joined the competition halfway through and looks like a 50 year-old hooker, despite having only been 17 when she started the training & development.

A 50 year old hooker, you say? Maybe I'll check it out. From what I saw with the wife the other day it looked interesting. I know BLACKPINK's Jennie from her being on The Idol. I know most hated the show, but I dug it for what it was, and the music from it is excellent.

The girls do a couple of BLACKPINK covers when they get to the top 20 survival show portion, but my knowledge of K-pop could fill a thimble. Before BTS was shoved down our throats at every available opportunity, the only Kpop tune I recognized was that "I Am the Best" song from 2NE1 that they had in the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in 2018.

Fair enough. I'd totally forgotten about that one.
