how well do you know her?
my first date with my wife was with another couple at the melting pot.....
only problem with that is...its probably a 3 hour meal....and if you dont like her - no way to cut the date short!

What do you mean by ordinary stuff? You mean boring chains?
I would vote for Ruffinos. Don't go any nicer than this if it is a first date.

My last first date was @ the original Chimes. Went well enough, we live together a year later.

i don't know her overly well but i'm not too worried about having to speed through dinner. yes i'd like to stay away from chains and such, just something that hopefully she's never been too before

Works every time (once).

Only thing is, she might think you're a serial killer driving her out to the middle of no where after 15 minutes driving down Nicholson...
DiGiulio Bros (near the overpass bars) and Little Village (downtown, 3rd St.) are great options if you're into Italian.

what's this place like? I looked at the website, would it be abnormal for two college kids to be in there on a staurday night?

Nah, not at all. It's good food, but not pretentious. Very nice folks. It might be a little too quiet for a first date though, no music playing could make the pauses in conversation noticable

Its a casual enough place. Small, good food. Polo and Khaki's or jeans would be fine. You wont be out of place. I dont know how else to describe it.
Its Money.
Oh and
River Road Shrimp appetizer. my .02

the chimes is always a safe bet, but if i had to do it all over again i would go with tsunami, awesome view, great food, strong drinks. mayonaise in the pantaise!

Good plan. If you take her to Roberto's you'll look like a guy that knows what he's doing. Anybody can find Ruth's Chris...

Although you might wanna do a drive by the day before so you know where it is etc. Cause its kinda in the sticks.

I suggest you have dinner at Capital City Grill and then take her upstairs to have a drink on the terrace at Tsunami's.
