TLDR: Bowhunting will kick you in the nuts, but it’s worth it when it doesn’t.

Took my boys out for youth weekend in TN at the end of October letting my oldest attempt to kill his first deer ever with a crossbow. Saturday afternoon a scrub buck gets within 20 yards, and I gave him the green light. That deer jumped the string as bad as any deer I’ve seen which resulted in an extremely high, nonfatal hit. Here’s a still shot from the video:

He was distraught. Like inconsolable. I was bummed too, but I told him to shake it off, and we’d give it another try the next day. There’s always another deer. Well, the next afternoon we’re in the same spot with another opportunity at a doe. 32 yards, quartered away, and he made a great shot which resulted in his first deer. Redemption!

Fast forward a couple weeks later, and I’m trying to hunt the most mature deer on my place. A 5.5 yo brute of a deer that might score 120”.

After several run-ins and out of range glimpses, I get a surprise opportunity at him when I see him skirting behind my blind through some cedars. I wasn’t prepared for the shot, but I felt like I could maneuver for one. Sure enough, I get drawn back after ranging him at 37 yards. In an awkward, kneeling position I let the arrow fly only to see it soar over his back. Clean miss. I thought I might vomit. Why tf do I do this to myself? It’s muzzleloader season. This deer could’ve been shot 6 times by now if I didn’t have this stupid bow in my hand. I spent the next several hours feeling sorry for myself but also knowing that I had to set an example. I couldn’t just tell my 8 yo to brush it off then not do it myself.

Fast forward to the next morning, and I’m hunting a completely different property for a midday sit contemplating why I insist on making things difficult on myself.

At 11:36 am I see a doe with a little one heading straight down the trail I’m set up on, and trailing her is a nice buck. She’s only about 5 steps from my tree when she spots me forcing the buck to stop as well. I had pre-ranged every tree around me and knew he was standing at about 27 yards, hard quartered-to. I got drawn and let it fly. He went 30 yards and crashed. Redemption! My youngest dubbed him “Red.” Just a reminder that there will always be ups and downs and not to get too down. Been a fun season.

It’s why it’s called hunting. Good job!

Did your son shoot at that buck while his head was down?

He did. But the shot was there at like 17 yards. In hindsight, I should’ve made him wait til he picked it up. Live and learn.
