Son and i have to be in Naples Florida in late february. He is dying to catch a peacock bass. Looking online it appears that all urban drainage canals have them. Any experience or tips from the board?

They are up in Tampa Bay area now also. As a youth we caught them mainly on east coast near Lauderdale. Naples and Everglades are full of them also.

Live bait (shiners) work best. You can easily catch them on diving plugs, top water, even a lively jerk bait. However I have NEVER ever caught one a plastic worm. I think the slow action is just a turn off to them. If you get tired of catching them and want to go for largemouth then put the worm on.

Look for dropoffs or shaded areas where they will wait to ambush. You get a few over 18” but most will be 16” or a couple pounds.

We caught a couple in Naples when we were on a trip to Fort Meyers beach. Fished the canal along the Golden Gate Community park. Think we caught 2 peacocks and my wife caught a large talapia. We used artificial.

Are peacocks good eating fish, and are fish safe to eat out of those canals?

Peacock bass supposedly are very good to eat. We didn't keep the ones we caught though. As far mercury/pollution concerns, can't think it would be any worse than here in LA. Can always check the Florida Department of environmental protection for impaired waterways.

there's a popular guide on instagram that catches the hell out of them, name is Mark Rogers and he seems to offer short trips for pretty cheap. I'd just buy the kid a 4 hour charter trip for Christmas or his birthday and really put him on them
