Saban as a Recruiter: Sentimore and Keeping Commitments
Posted on 2/3/09 at 12:26 am

With Saban and Alabama now our biggest competitors for Louisiana talent, and Sentimore going back and forth with people telling him to keep his commitments, I had some thoughts on this.
Sentimore should go to school where he wants to go to school and forget about what everyone else is saying.
This junk about keeping your commitment in the recruiting process is laughable. I read that Saban supposedly used this line with Sentimore to get him to stick with Alabama. Does anyone see the irony in this?
Saban, who left LSU and Miami in the middle of contracts.
Saban, who the moment he took the Alabama job went after every LSU COMMITMENT he could.
Saban, who has continued to try and turn Janzen Jackson and Kenny Bell, both COMMITMENTS to LSU.
Saban, who signs 30 players every year while graduating 10-12, meaning that players that committed to Alabama will not finish their eligiblity there if they are not starters by their Junior seasons.
So, he's going to tell Sentimore to keep his commitment, while actively trying to get other players to break their commitments and while using "attrition" against the players he already has? And people don't see through this?
I bring this up because of the people lauding Sentimore for having character by keeping his commitment. Sentimore needs to go where he wants to go and forget about what everyone else thinks. Those people won't be there for him later on if he regrets his decision.
And honestly, I feel this way about Janzen Jackson or any top LSU player that Saban might grab. If they want to go to Alabama, fine. Go. But, don't guilt a young man to sticking with a decision before signing day if he has changed his mind. He hasn't signed yet. Once he does, that's it.
But, I'll support Sentimore in whatever HE chooses and wish him well.

Where did you read this? Was it what a poster on this site thinks happened? If so it must be true.

Painfully enough, I have to agree with the Bammers on this one. YOu don't know what Saban told the kid.
If his heart is LSU then he should come here in my opinion b/c he'll regret it in the long run if he goes somewhere just b/c he committed there through this rollercoaster process.
But as for Saban telling him he needs to honor his committment, you're stretching.

I mean honestly, do you really believe a kid isn't going to play for the school he wants to play for? Whether it's because of the relationships he's built at Alabama, the anger he has at miles for not offering when other major programs were, or bc he's just more confident in his abillity to succeed at Bama more than Lsu doesn't matter
He is going to go to the school HE WANTS to go to. This is the main reason I thought he was flipping when he said he was visiting Lsu bc I remembered the earlier interviews before he commited where he was begging for an lsu offer.
It happens. It happened to Bama last year with Antoine Mclain. That kid tried to commit early to us and we told him to hold off bc we had prospects rated higher. We missed on those and tried to get back in on Antoine but he wasn't comfortable with the staff anymore and went to Clemson
I understand where they're coming from though bc Big time D1 football is highly competive so why would I want to play for a coaching staff that obviously didn't think the most of my abillity to start with when I can play for someone else who did think enough of me to give an unconditional offer

Do you really need to "hear it" or "read it" to know that Satan tried to get the kid to "honor" is Bama commit? The stupid arguement that Satan didn't or wouldn't is about the most assinine thing I have ever heard. And yes among other things Satan is a hypocrite.

Look we don't know what he said or didn't say..
but tell me, you don't imagine every single HC in the country giving these kids this line up waivering..
"now come on son, we have been counting on you, we need you to keep you word to us, we stop recruiting the other player for your spot, we really need you." ...etc..
It's business...You darn right Saban pressured him...but what coach doesn't? It's just that Saban and an Urban probably lay it on thicker than do other coaches.
I am glad the poster pointed out the irony that comes from Nick Saban, honoring committments
Please...give us a break...Nick does whatever he wants when he feels like it, obviously he doesn't worry too much what people think

Bottom Line, Saban has not gotten a single player from Louisiana that Miles wanted (excluding players with grade issues that Miles never actively recruited from day 1).

don't want to beat a dead horse but the 9 seniors were not saban recruits. hold overs from santion days.

The problem with this is that the coach who recruits a player in many cases won't be there by the time a player is a junior. Players should pick the based upon what school they want to attend not the coach who is recruiting them.

A dishonest man whos selling point is integrity is sad. We can see through this but i can see where 17-18 kids cant.
In the end everyone will see through this and the sad part is these kids will suffer while Saban will sit someone else with millions.
These kids are a means to an end, and that part is sad.

Great post, forget all the crap, Sentimore should go where he wants to go. Either school will give him all the support he needs to excel and meet his athletic and academic goals. So where his heart is, is where he should go and his family and friends should support whatever decision he makes.

Isn't/wasn't LSU pursuing Richardson (Bama), Debose (Florida) and Sentimore (Bama) after they committed? I think it's a coach's job to present the best case for his school. Sometimes kids choose schools without seeing everything. Miles gave a good effort in representing what LSU had for each of these guys. Didn't work for them. But it did for the rest of the group. LSU did very well this year. Be pleased with that.

And this is different than Miles going after Sentimore who COMMITTED to ALABAMA ???

Steven, don't act you don't know better. There is a difference with in-state talent.
