Went to Graceland for the first time a few weeks ago. What a letdown. I guess in 1957 it was on the outskirts of Memphis. Elvis passed in 1977. It’s been left as is since then. It seems that the city grew through it so now it’s pretty much a ghetto area. What a shame.

Ironically it’s in Whitehaven…. Definitely not that anymore
Tourists just bebop to it thinking it’s a touristy area and very quickly it becomes super sketch away from the grounds

You must have bad taste if you don’t like green shag carpet wallpaper.

In 1950's Graceland was a large-for-the-time country home with surrounding vacant land. When bought by Presley, the owners then didn't want it, didn't want to pay the upkeep and were trying to sell it to a nearby church. The area quickly filled with low-cost "starter" homes that became black neighborhoods as the white population moved out east.
It's hard to imagine that Graceland will be a major tourist draw much longer. Maybe the estate will develop a better-located Memphis Music Museum/Venue.

It is just wildly overpriced.

Agreed - as time goes on Elvis fades from our collective consciousness. Graceland becomes an obsolete relic.

I've been to Graceland twice, once about twenty years ago solo, and again about five years ago. The second time I went with my family, including my two adolescent (at the time) daughters. I thought we'd go for an hour or so but we ended up being there for five or six hours, it was awesome, one of the best museum/attractions I've ever experienced. The most surprising thing is how much my children enjoyed it. They had no idea who Elvis was and they had a great time. Graceland is awesome.

Agreed, the Graceland experience is exceptionally well managed but not very personable to my taste. The Presley estate has been well managed since shortly after Elvis' death. Graceland is owned by granddaughter Riley Keough who also has a share of Elvis Presley Enterprises along with Authentic Brands Group. Even though quite a few people oil the Elvis money machine, I don't see it lasting another generation. Memphis isn't the draw that Nashville is.
