BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A funeral home has started offering discounts for services stemming from murder as youth violence continues to surge in Baton Rouge.

A. Hamilton Platinum Funeral Services off Choctaw has doubled its staff for homicide services and is now pushing for additional security at those services, according to assistant director Keon Preston.

“It’s starting to be a lot in this city,” Preston said. “We’re not burying 75 and 80-year-old people on a daily basis anymore. They’re youngsters. We are burying the future generation, and it becomes very concerning.”

Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman L’Jean McKneely said the department is investigating a dozen shootings over the past weekend, with most of them stemming from social media beef.

“There’s no real interaction with the groups as far as face-to-face interaction, fights. What we do see is that they are having their issues through social media, through texting,” McKneely said.

McKneely said community members are expressing concern about the violence. Preston laid out his concerns directly to young people involved in violence.

“To all the juveniles who think it’s ok to shoot, rob, kill people, and all that, this is what you go in when we arrive to pick you up. You go in a body bag. You just zipped up like you’re nothing,” Preston said.

He called for conflict resolution and community involvement to address the cycle of retaliation.

“Nobody wins. Absolutely nobody wins. This one do me this, alright so me and all my boys come back and retaliate so now he gone. Ok, they boys are coming back, so it’s a tit for tat revolving door until what, until we all dead? How many more have to die before we realize there’s other ways to resolve it? Until your mom wearing black?” Preston said.

Preston said he hopes his message reaches community guardians to encourage more oversight of youth and promote settling disputes through handshakes rather than violence.

I wonder what comes with the I Got Murdered package instead of the I Died of a Heart Attack package.

I'd be charging extra... there's more work to a violent death plus extra security for fear of retaliation shootings.

They wring their hands but nothing changes.

Seems like they're trying to drum up murder business. Bold strategy.

You are right Human Sally. You never know when someone will retaliate. They will roll up on a funeral to get who they are after.

Maybe a Buy One, Get One Free offer. Better yet, maybe they give you a Members Card with ten stars on it. For each funeral, they punch a hole in one of the stars. When you get your full "card punched " (double entendre intentional), you get a free funeral and a 12" sub.
