State Rep. Julie Emerson is giving up her senior position in the House to take on an even more important role as Gov. Jeff Landry’s chief of staff, the governor’s office announced Tuesday.
Emerson, 37, will take over next week from Kyle Ruckert, who is leaving to oversee an outside political group that’s working for Landry’s reelection next year.
“Julie Emerson is a proven leader with a deep understanding of Louisiana’s people, our State legislature, and the work that needs to be done to move Louisiana forward,” Landry said in a statement.

A third-term Republican, Emerson has represented Carencro and surrounding towns north of Lafayette since 2016, spending the past two years as chair of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
Emerson was in the news most recently when she announced last month that she was dropping her bid to be Louisiana’s next senator.
She said she didn’t see a path to victory once U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow joined the race after receiving the endorsement of President Donald Trump. Besides Letlow, state Treasurer John Fleming is challenging the reelection of U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy.
During her six months as a candidate, Emerson campaigned as a fresh-faced conservative.
She works as a political consultant and knocked off a Democratic incumbent in 2015 to win her House seat.

Emerson is the first woman to chair a finance committee in the Legislature.
Also in 2024, Emerson sponsored legislation pushed by Landry that has created the closed primary system for federal elections beginning this year. The three-day qualifying period in those elections begins on Wednesday.
In yet another measure in 2024, Emerson sponsored the legislation that repealed the corporate franchise tax, which is a levy on corporate assets.

I do believe Emerson’s heart being in politics originated from the right place, but I really wish she had made some income and gained some career experience outside of politics. She was a good state rep for her district, though.
Just think having at least 5-10 years of a profession career that’s not all tied to politics, or higher ed academia, can greatly help a politician be an even more effective leader.
