Prien Lake in Lake Charles

Have any of you guys ever launched a boat at the Prien Lake Park public boat launch? Is there anything to look out for when running a boat in the lake such as shallow water, stumps, etc? TIA

its good to know your way around if not stick the channel markers. Hurricanes have left a lot of debris that folks still hit and when tide is out creates low spots and humps in the lake that will kill al lower off

Many times, ramp was poorly designed so you may have to back down further than normal. Ramp hasn’t become slick with algae yet but make sure your footing is solid. From dock to no wake zone there’s a silting problem on extremely low tides so trim up accordingly.
Boat riding or fishing?
Westbank is super shallow with old cypress stumps closer to old river point, give it wide berth, same while in the river. Tide has been falling in the morning so easier to navigate.

Thanks OleBallCoach and KemoSabe. I'll just be boat riding to try out a boat I might buy. It doesn't have to be in Prien Lake. Are there any public boat landings in Lake Charles you can recommend?

Cal Pt is a good ramp but Prien will work fine for what you are doing.
Ramp under east side of I10 bridge could be more exciting though.
Ellender bridge ramp is good but boat parking sucks.
Westlake ramp is good with parking.

KemoSabe, have you run through Lake Charles from the landing under the I-10 Calcasieu Bridge?

Launched many of time out of there. The middle of that lake is pretty wide open. People take their kids tubing in there pretty often.
I’d launch from there and run towards the 210 overpass then down the channel.

Haven’t launched in Westlake in forever but do go under rr tressel going north. LC is unmatched for water activities in Louisiana.

No problem
If you get on Google Maps and find the boat launch at Prien lake, you can follow along with this next paragraph
The side of the lake that the launch and the houses are on are plenty deep and clear of no debris. From the launch moving towards the 210 bridge is wide open and that’s where most of the people do the recreational tubing and boating. going under the 210 bridge and taking a left down the channel is clear you could take that all the way down to the gulf if you wanted to. Across from the launch on the other side of the lake there is an island around the shore of that island is shallow. If you go left instead of right towards the 210 bridge you can loop around the island to another open water area, but I wouldn’t go over there. That that area is pretty shallow and full of old wooden post.

This. Don't be surprised when you have to put your truck rear tires in the water to get off the trailer. It was a bad design....they tried to fix it, and its still bad. But it is the nicer launch in the area for boat riding.

I think the launch under the I-10 bridge is currently closed due to bridge construction.
