the NCAA doesn't recognize a FBS national champion at all

the "consensus" list is just recognizing that there was a split.

Perhaps NCAA is watching this site to guard against typo police. They seemed to have fixed it already.

or

You did not read the list correctly. My bet is on you mistaking 2004 for 2003.

By the way "Louisiana State" is LSU.

They list splits in years where there are splits - except in 2003.

there were no national champions in 2004-2008 nor were there any 1998-2002

Which poll other than Coaches poll (aka BCS) has LSU as number 1? Did NCAA not list that poll?

comparing it to the national champions list on wikipedia, it looks like they define a "consensus champion" as one that was only picked as a champion by a major poll...

therefore we're not the "consensus" champion, we're the 2003 BCS champion.

ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll doesn't count?

But LSU still should be listed as a "consensus" champ, along with USC, in 03, since we won the Coach's Poll.

the Coaches Poll winner is contractually obligated to be the BCS winner.. so it's not a consensus championship.
