Bump this thread when Marcus Thornton places 3rd for R.O.Y

Thornton led all rookies in scoring in the 2009 summer league, and placed 3rd in steals per game among all players. He did this while managing only 1.0 TO/game. While it was only a few games, it confirmed what many of us already knew from watching him throughout his collegiate career: he is going to be a good NBA player and is capable of making an early impact.
With Butler out of the picture, he'll only have to compete with Julian Wright (who he ran circles around in the summer league) for time at the SG position. Mo Pete is done. When we were at our absolute weakest at 2 last year, he only played in half of the season's games and got only 12.0 MPG when he did play.
Thornton will average starter's minutes for the season, even if he does not start initially.
There are no other roster moves in the works, unless Thornton completely blows it-- in which case you might see a SG brought in before the trade deadline. Shinn likes Thornton (and more importantly, the millions will save by not bringing in another SG) and wants to give him a chance to shine.
He will be tasked to do what he does best: score. PPG is by far the most valued statistic for assessing Rookie of the Year. This is an overall weak draft class. Getting 14.8 PPG (which is he more than capable of putting up) will make him a shoe-in for 3rd place.
1st. Blake Griffin
2nd. Tyler Hansborough (Before you laugh... go look at how he dominated the summer league--great #'s and undefeated team record)
3rd. Marcus Thornton
Book it.

Who exactly did he dominate?

The box score. Numbers are all that matters when it comes to R.O.Y. voting. The fact that he is white and already has a high profile make him a guaranteed top vote getter if he puts up numbers that are even remotely close to what he did in the SL. Bonus factor: The Pacers will have a greatly improved team record, mainly due to the emergence of Roy Hibbert (who might get most improved player this year) + signing of Danthay Jones.

Why risk it with starters for most of the games?

however, great summer league + wide open playing time = decent regular season numbers

Summer League is mostly worthless. Kwame Brown tore it up in Summer League.

FWIW, I wish Hansbrough would have fallen to the Hornets.

Outlier. Lots of extraneous variables involved, such as age and lack of personal discipline.
Plus, I bet if you crunched the data you'd find that there is a higher positive correlation between summer league performance and regular season performance with guards as opposed to bigs. And this probably spikes through the roof when you control for minutes played in regular season. (And MT will get tons of minutes, for better or worse) Wish I had time to run this.

So it was crazy of me to make a reasonable hypothesis which could be confirmed/falsified with existing data? If you think it's so crazy, take a couple hours and prove how wrong I am.

very logical claim, due to the fact that all of our 2 guards suck balls!

I say it goes:
1. Griffin
2. Evans
3. Harden
4. Hansbrough
Darkhorse: Ellington

No you are wrong. Hansbrough will be a better Haslem.
