Is our defense that bad or is Washington O' that good?

I know defense last year was the main problem. On paper it looks like we have studs out there, but we were run on easily and passed on. It of course got better as the night wore on. Just a worrisome year and I honestly don't see us doing much better than last year. I of course would love to be wrong.
Our QB position is still a work in progress. But you have to give a guy who looks that good on paper (at 6'5" and appears to be mobile) a little room to grow. Seems to me Scott could be a major part of letting him grow? How many touches did he get last night? Seems to me he could be a pro style bruiser who needs 20+ carries to get rolling. Just never seemed to get it going after a couple solid runs early. Was this due to Washington adjustments or is the O' Line shakey as well?

The defense had some really bright spots... but a combination of...
no pressure from the ends, poor play from the safeties, and extremely conservative defensive playcalling on 3rd downs was a bad combination.
Oh, and Washington played extremely well.

locker is the real deal. but tt will kill us if they dont tighten up. the def can and will improve

im just sick of hearing that after every fricking game
too many mediocre offenses have field days against us
good defenses shouldnt allow that shite, obviously we dont have a good d
that said, Locker is that good, also they had an adv b/c they have a new offense and we couldnt have prepared properly for it

This point again brings up Scott. Shouldn't we become a run first team? Maybe even a run second team? This would take care of a QB that is still growing and keep a shakey defense rested and off the field. Do we just not have the personnel to pull it off? Are we not trying? You obviously have to throw to keep a defense honest, but throw when the defense cheats up and run otherwise. Don't go away from running just for the sake of forcing a balanced attack.

only if we can run
last night our interior OL was manhandled

Run calling was very transparent... and UW was keying on lead-runs. The playaction bootleg was open all night. The coaches just have to see that and take advantage of it.
And to be fair... Scott isn't making the yardage on his own that he's used to. Plus a revolving door at FB and a completely ineffective 2-TE single-back set doesn't help.

That is what I am asking. Is it personnel? He seemed to have success running off tackle early on. Nothing wrong with 4 yards in a cloud of dust if able to get it. Boring yes. But who cares if it puts points up and lets a defense rest and a young QB breathe.

agree 100%
but the question is, do we still rely on these formations b/c miles feels he HAS to run inside
scott fumbled and was benched, but we still ran inside (trindon and murphy) for most of the game after that

I think there are 2 guys on the squad right now that can get that tough yardage (Ridley and potentially Allen) even if Scott isn't that bull he can be.

Jefferson and KW looked good on the speed option out of the shotgun. Why we run that play to the shortside of the field every time is still beyond me.

Uh... Maybe because it works?

I think it has more to do with ball security, and the likelihood that a mishandled pitch will find its way out-of-bounds... but the sideline also provides the D with a 12th man.

so it's impossible that it might work better on the long side of the field?

Watching the game last night reminded me alot of the '05 Zona State game where a new LSU DC had his hands full with a mobile QB, competent running game, and visiting crowd revved up.
That defense turned out OK in the end, let's hope this one does the same.

All LSU has to do is score more points than the other team and they should win...
