How did LSU slip to sub=standard from 1990-1999

I know it was terrible coaching, but seriously with the talent in the state and nearby Texas how could this happen. I moved away from Louisiana in 1990 to Atl and didn't get to experience first hand what really happened.

The slipping already started in 1989.

We hired Curley, and all of our good players went out of state for the most part.

Archer only wanted to settle for that area and Florida for that talent and it didn't work well for him.

do a search for the Mike Archer thread, all kinds of good stuff in there.

Horrendous coaching.
LSU's athletic department was the picture of ineptitude and incompetence in the 1980's and 1990's. It was staffed by a group of miserly dilettantes who lacked basic intelligence, judgment, and professionalism. As a result, they made a series of disastrous coaching hires that nearly scuttled the program altogether.
LSU's administration has a dreadful record of assessing coaching talent.
Ultimately, we did it to ourselves.

This sounds like a description of what's been happening at aTm the last few years.

Joe Dean can be blamed for most of this.
Curley should have never lasted as long as he did...the writing was on the wall from the beginning.
If it weren't for significant dropoff in ticket sales/attendance Curley would have been around even longer under Joe Dean.

There was no Tigerdroppings back then to tell the coaches how to coach and tell them who to play.
Chicken has saved the LSU football program.
Holy shite I never thought about this. 2001- Tigerdroppings starts, and we win the SEC. Two years later, national champions.
Now the quality of posters on the rant has gone down, which would explain LSU's struggles last year.

decent season, but we still got annihilated by UF and Bama. We won at Auburn...only win vs ranked team that yr.

We had the pieces in place to have a special season this yr. the coaches truly messed this one up...our 3 losses were unacceptable plus we took down #1 that yr.
Then the wheels flew off

Our facilities were in pretty bad shape also.
The football stadium did not have suites or new upper decks. The basketball arena was a joke - seats from the 70's. The baseball stadium received cosmetic makeovers but dated to the 30's. No academic center for student athletes. No football or other sports practice facilities. The Carl Maddox Field House is in disrepair to this day. YET THEY FELT THE NEED TO BUILD A NEW ATHLETIC ADMIN BUILDING FIRST! Bad priorities.

started with bo rein being killed and stovall taking over on a moments notice. coach stovall just didn't have it. then we began our parade of coachs (like bama over the last 15 yrs) and only one was really good; that being bill arnsbarger. arnsbarger, however, was old and didn't want to coach that long so he tryed to strong arm LSU into beint the AD. no go at LSU; football coaches do not become the AD here. not only that (our tradition of no football coaches as AD), arnsbarger had absolutely none of the qualifications necessary to run an athletic dept. florida hire him and he was a figure head over there. anyway, we followed him with the series of bad hires; my opinion is that they were cheap hires. our admin. screwed up; after arnsbargar they should have gone for the gusto.

It starts at the top, Dean, Archer, Curley, Dinardo..plus morons like Cusimano and other assorted cowboy SFBs(sh!t-for-brains) on the BOS at the time.
The state's best won hardware for all the national heavyweights that came right into LA for our best ballers..
Peyton Manning(never would be a Tiger..but still)
Yet, others that may have if LSU with better HC and Program at the time..Dunn..Minor..Ed Reed..Reggie Wayne..Greg Brown..Marshall Faulk(recruited by LSU as a DB only)..Major Applewhite(overlooked locally because Weiner had him hand off to Minor and Dunn..only tossed maybe 8 to 15 tops per game..but when did were accurate darts)..etc..

We had a coach who could coach but not recruit, followed by a coach who could recruit but not coach.

Arnsparger recommended Archer as his successor...which has always baffled me.
I guess if he was pissed at LSU about not getting the AD job, that would explain it.

You just started my weekend. Best post this week, I think.
If Tigerdroppings had existed back then and LSU paid attention to the rantards. I am SURE we would probably have at least 2 more NCs.
