Drew Brees and Payton do this perfectly...I realize they are the best in teh business, but seriously how hard is it pump fake, look one direction and go the other with the ball...all planned in your set?

I almost never see a college QB fake a bubble screen and then go the other direction (vertically)

It seems it would freeze fast linebackers and DL slightly to buy sometime for the WR and OL...with LSU's speed, this should be used frequently..

Just an observation from watching Monday night football..

My guess would be because I think the college db's play the receiver more than read the qb.

I've been screaming for the pump fake for 2 years...
The Georgia QB's have used it pretty well over the years. I certainly think it should be used by LSU more...

speed of the game. if you pump fake and aren't able to go through your progressions after that very quickly you're likely to take a sack. also receivers are better at getting open in the NFL and quarterbacks like Brees and Manning can throw a receiver open. Thus they can have a one read play where they manipulate the safety and are pretty certain they're going to one receiver. if that receiver is covered they're still throwing to him, just where the defender is not. that's alot to ask of a developing quarterback.

Actually, it wouldn't be too difficult to try it once or twice. Almost like a combination of a misdirection play, then turning the other way to throw a timing route. A lot of college qbs throw quick timing routes where they aren't going through progressions and reading the defense for more than a second.

I would prefer to see timing and progressions over pump fakes.

JJ is late on some throws because he locks in on receivers. Not as bad as the great white hope (JL), but I will give the 19 year old a break.

He needs some coaching on pocket awareness more than pump fakes at this point. That's on Crowton though.

Auburn executed a pump fake to perfection against Bama. Of course, the Tide was in Saban's man to man coverage at the time. The CB bit and it was all over with. However, many college defenses are going to zone coverage to combat the advent of spread offenses.

Gotta be pretty damn fundamentally sound, too. Have to be able to reset your feet and need a good arm. Also need to be able to see the whole field in a glance. I'd say most QB's in this conference are more than capable of this...so to answer the question: I don't know. An OC/QB coach would need to drill it into the QB's brain, as most QB's are lazy about their fakes, follow throughs, and footwork.

Crazy Tiger - awesome pics.

As for the pump fake...ah, never mind, Crazy Tiger's pics made me forget what I was going to say.

This.

It's hard enough to receive the snap, drop back, go through the progressions *and* proper footwork *and* good throwing technique *and* omygodthe350poundDEisinmyface, *plus* a pumpfake. All in 2-3 seconds.

The pump fake was MONEY for me when I played quarterback for my 3rd grade recess football team. Defenses bit every time. Of course, I had unnaturally good footwork, pocket awareness, and field-reading abilities for my level of play.

That's the thing, most colleges don't have good enough secondaries to leave guys on an island, so they play majority zone.

For a pump fake to work, you need a couple things to come together.... set it up with a previous play, the right defense, on OL that can give you time, etc... it's not the easiest way to move the ball, but if it works it's usually going for big yardage (AU's longest play from scimmage came this season against La Tech -- 90+ yards -- out-and-up with a QB pump fake).

JJ averages about 1.5-2 seconds before the pash rush gets to him...simply no time for a pump fake.
