For the horror fans out there, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the "final girl" motif that is very common in slasher films.

If you've watched a lot of slasher films (or at least seen "Scream") then you know that the "final girl" is typically virginal, abstains from alcohol and drugs, and that her character arc tends to go from weak and feminine to strong and masculine through "phallic appropriation" (i.e. by adopting a weapon that is phallic like).

I think this concept is very interesting. As a fan of the slasher genre, I like this formula. It works very well but I guess I don't quite understand why it works so well, or how it actually came to be part of the formula.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this. You can do some further reading here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_girl

I'd say it's because if you had "Final Guy" running away from the slasher at the end, he'd look like a bitch and the audience would never buy into the suspense.
