heard you can get a $1500 per day contract to lay boom in the marsh. all you need is a deckhand @ $350 per day. someone i know says he has a contract in hand and if he comes through I will be his deckhand. sounds to good to e true

From what I hear the people in the effected Parish who are politically connected or in the right families or circles are getting the contracts.
Thats the way it works in South Louisiana.

Would you rather the work go to out of state contractors? Kinda like after Katrina...

I don't think out of state is the answer. But there are a lot of people in the parishes if not connected politically to the correct family who are shut out. Its not a fair process
But honestly it doesn't concern me.
I know a guy who made millions after Katrina on a FEMA contract which paid for him to buy airboats and supposedly clean debris from the marsh.
I question how much debris was actually ever cleaned up.

Call around and get donations to help clean up the spill...and then just keep the $. JK...kinda.

I HATE THE CRAP OUT OF THIS ARGUMENT!!! so you're saying you'd rather pay more for a corrupt contract than pay someone less via following the rules? if people from the outside can do it for cheaper, why not use them?

You're assuming a lot with that argument. I meant i'd rather get the guys who have been put out of work by this mess(shrimpers, oystermen, commercial fishermen, guides) to work than the lowest bidder. Maybe Katrina was the wrong example.

if they put in a qualified bid and it's low, i have no problem with it. i'd obviously rather local people get the jobs, but legally.
also, is this considered public or private at this point (ie: is BP paying or the gubbment)?

my bad, i thought this was public. i think it would be better PR for them to give it to the locals. the problem is, they're not gonig to ge as organized as an outsider. They need to give whatever contract to someone that will utilize local labor...

I have been fielding calls all day from out of state contractors come down here for work and contracts.
Not to mention I spoke to BD guy at Shaw this morning and he tells me that they are bidding work directly for BP.
