Coast Guard told BP to do more and better and sooner, with containment plans.

Now whenever/if BP closes down the flow at all, and if the pipe ruptures deep underground then pushing BP is going to look like a big mistake.

Does anyone else hear stories, read a link, about two additional possible leaks below the surface of the gulf ocean floor, already? That was a story/speculation going around about 10 days ago.

1) I've been trying to avoid the political side of this whole mess and limit myself to the technical problem of shutting in the well and containing the flow. However I'll say this. It seems a little disingenuous of the Coast Guard to be pushing BP like this if it's true that they forced them to abandon the sealed LMRP cap approach. If they had left BP alone maybe there would be a sealed LMRP cap sitting on top of the riser right now and a lot less oil would be leaking into the Gulf.

2) I have no idea what potential problem you're referring to when you mention a pipe rupturing underground. If BP successfully caps the well, there will be nowhere for the oil to go. What would it leak into?

I remember hearing/reading some time back that if the pipe has been weakened, ruptured and oil has worked it's way in between the pipe and the strata surrounding it - The oil will carve out it's own route to the surface... Creating a completely unchecked (and likely uncheckable) gusher.

More Oil... Coming out faster... No way to stop it.

I don't know how accurate this is or it's probability of happening... Just relaying what I can recall.

Sounds like you heard/read the same thing I did.

My understanding is that the flow *is* in the annulus according to the best theories out there. But nevertheless, if they can successfully cement in the formation, how will the oil be able to get out?
