My first rifle

A buddy and I started hunting for the first time this season. His family has some land in St. Francisville, so that's where we go. We both decided we wanted to bow hunt and both enjoy it, however, I have some other friends who invited me to go rifle hunting next season. They have a camp in Pride, La. I would like to buy a rifle that I can use in both places. I think a .30-06 would be great when I'm in St Franny, but don't think it's enough rifle to take with my other friends. I've never owned a gun before, so I'm not too familiar. From what I've read on the OB, I believe I should spend less $ on a rifle and more on optics. I would like to stay > $1000, and am planning on getting it for the start of next rifle season. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA

they have some pretty good deals on used rifles in the Louisiana sportsman classified section.

i was referring to being able to kill anything in N. America with a 30-06.
he is a new hunter, why run out and buy multiple guns at this point.
have you ever looked at the balistics of a 30-06 with a 130-150 gr. bullet, compared to a 270? at the distance that i would expect him to be shooting, it's a small difference, easily obtainable with practice.

If you have never owned a gun before please take a shooting and safety class. No need to read about you in the paper.
I am buying the Browning 300 short mag. Not sure if I am adding the Boss system or not.

this.
weatherby vanguard is nice in that budget and will leave you with plenty to spend on a scope.

I shoot 30-06 and wouldnt trade it for anything

My personal preference is the .270, particularly the WSM. But you can't really go wrong with a 30-06 either. But a good gun, I like the Rem 700, and a bitchin scope and fill up the freezer.

A savage w/accutrigger in whatever caliber you choose. Then throw a leuoplod gold ring or a zeiss and that will keep you at your 1000 market maybe just a hair over.

You should take a reading comprehension course since I said that's what I've been "told", not "read".

you just want a new toy. Go to Gallery of Guns, look through the E-Flyer and buy something. In a couple of moths, repeat the action

.30-06 is enough rifle for anything in North America, including elk and the like.
If you're just going to be hunting whitetails inside of 100yards, you could use anything from that to a .30-30, .270, .308, .7mm, 7.62x39, etc. etc.
Hell, you could even pick up a surplus 8mm Mauser for a couple hundred and throw a cheap scope on it and kill anything inside of that distance.
You could use a slug gun too.

I think he just quoted the wrong person.
but its still a stupid a statement since most of the people that are shot are by old people that had been hunting forever

I'm pretty sure the "safety" statement was made because the OP clearly stated that he had never owned a gun. No need to jump with both feet when you can mingle into a situation.

it was pretty obvious that he was responding to the OP so don't get your panties all in a wad
