Cancer survivor Mark Herzlich was given a lifeline by the Omaha Nighthawks, which picked him up in the United Football League (UFL) draft

quote:

Herzlich was expected to be among the 254 picks in the weekend's NFL draft but was overlooked. However, the Boston College linebacker was selected by the Nighthawks with the second-to-last pick of the UFL draft Monday night.

Herzlich now must make the choice between fighting for a place on an NFL roster or taking the Nighthawks' offer, NFL.com reported.

If he gets drafted with the second to last pick of the UFL draft, it doesn't seem his chances of making an NFL team as a FA are very good. Might be better for him to prove he is back to something approaching his 2009 standards in the UFL (real game time action). If so, an NFL team will pick him up

Couple of analysts have speculated that he went that low in the UFL draft was cause they don't think he will sign with any UFL team. They think he is to focused on making an NFL roster to even show up

reasonable angle for why he was drafted that low. Hadn't thought of it. I guess it will be a no brainer then if he gets a FA offer from an NFL team.
Good luck to him. If anyone deserves a chance, its Herzlich.

What's the deal with him? Was he overrated in college or are teams scared because of his bout with cancer?

lost his speed from 2008 due to cancer. If cancer never hit him, every analyst had him pegged as a 1st or 2nd rounder.

He was possibly the best LB in college football in 2008. If he'd entered the draft, he likely would have been drafted by the end of the first round. In 2009 he used his redshirt (which he didn't use as a true frosh) and focused on treatment. In 2010, he was not at quick as he was earlier in his career, but was still a productive player, particularly as a rusher off the edge on passing downs. I still think he makes a roster because he will be a very productive Special Teams player at least. Plus, he is a high upside guy.
