Not a flame, just a simple question. What, in your opinion, has Chip Kelly done to make him a great coach? He's had 1 decent season and 1 good season and he has lost both bowl games. Not exactly indicative of greatness. I'll hang up and listen.

His record in his first two years as a head coach (with less than super-elite talent) speaks for itself.

If it makes you feel better to think he's just average -- well, do what you gotta do.

As far as Oregon is concerned, he is a great coach. Taken Oregon to places they've never been before.

But yeah, 2 seasons at Oregon isn't exactly going to punch his ticket to the Hall of Fame.

Little premature to declare him great on a national level. But he is the biggest thing to ever happen to college football in the state of Oregon.

I disagree, saying "Not exactly indicative of greatness" is a flame.

How many coaches do you know have won 2 conference titles and made it into 2 BCS bowls including the National championship in their first two seasons? I can tell you in the PAC 10 there has never been a first year coach to even win the conference their first year. Also if you look at the talent he has from scouts perspective it's even more impressive.

Yeah, but I wish we could have afforded Petersen.

Also, his accomplishments are during a period when USC was on their way down.

I imagine there could be other factors involved like other teams in the PAC getting better.

I'm no Oregon fan, but I'm going to answer anyway because I want to.

He is very creative on offense and keeps the defense tired and on their toes. He assembled a great overall team and has built a strong program in just two seasons... two BCS bowl games in a row and an appearance in the BCS National Championship Game.

"Greatness" is a subjective term. Is he on the elite level of college coaches? I would say no... not right now. But if he remains consistent, he will be very soon.

How is any season you win the conference championship in a AQ conference just "decent". Kelly has done more with less. Not that Oregon has not had decent recruits but Kelly is working with mostly 3 and some 4 star recruits. This year will be the first year we really see any 5 star recruits play.

Kelly has done enough that Florida came calling when their spot opened up. As far as what makes him a great coach is the fact that he is innovative. I think anyone would respect Jon Gruden's opinion and he thinks very highly of him, to the point he almost took a job with the U of O to learn their offense but his wife objected to moving.

Kelly has pushed the tempo and teams have not found a way to stop him consistently. And not only is he putting up record numbers he's doing while only having the ball about 20 mins a game and has fielded a defense who is one of the tops in the country in yards per play while playing 40 mins a game.

I'm no Oregon fan but he sure seems to get a lot out of his players and they sure seem to execute well.

He looks like a great coach to me. There is no shame in losing to last year's Auburn team.
