This is my first deer season in NW LA so I'm looking for new areas. I don't have an ATV, so I am also trying to avoid places with lots of ATV access.

I'm going scout Soda Lake WMA this weekend. Anyone ever deer hunt it? If so, do you think accessing it using a kayak down 12 Mile Bayou is feasible?

My next stop is Loggy Bayou if Soda Lake doesn't look promising, maybe Bayou Pierre, and then moving on to Bodcau. I prefer bow hunting, so Loggy and Soda Lake are best set up for me I think, but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks.

I hear Loggy Bayou it a great bow hunting area with PY possibilities. It is usually pretty swampy but this has been a dry last two seasons so water is scarce. They have a gun lottery around Thanksgiving but it is mostly bow hunting.

With the drought, accessing it from 12 mile is going to be difficult. If you can climb out of the bayou it won't be too bad but that whole area back there is solid cypress knees. It's difficult in the best of times, which this may actually be.

Also, there's some ENORMOUS bucks in Soda Lake. My uncle has a place that pretty much backs onto it so I've been familiar with it my whole life. Over the years there have been some truly stunning bucks taken in there. Generally they are kept quiet.

That's extremely encouraging. I will be going out there Saturday morning or Monday morning to get a first hand look at the place from an accessibility standpoint. I'll probably bring my kayak and try that first. If that won't work, I'll walk the levee and go from there.

I'm hoping the lack of ATV access and the bow hunting only will keep the pressure low, especially once modern firearms opens up elsewhere. Are you familiar with the terrain/vegetation near the bayou? Will there be trees to climb or woods open enough to hunt from a tree?

Kisatchie National Forest has some awesome public land to hunt. Deer, treerats, and turkeys!

I'll have to look into it. Does it stay crowded often, or just normal times like opening weekends and during modern firearms?

It is so big that you should be able to finds spot to hunt without any bystanders around you.

Closer to the bayou it's swampy and covered in old cypress so you probably won't be climbing those. As you go up the hills it's hardwood bottom then pines at the top. For such a small place it's really got a lot of terrain changes.
