Stroube's - Not impressed

Reservations were for 8:30 on Friday night. Ended up seated around 8:50. Not a terrible wait, but we didn't get water much less drinks until 9:10. The booth we were in was comfortable, but faced a wall. Kind of crappy.
Drinks were pretty good, but the cucumber garnish on my gin and tonic looked like it had been left out on the bar floor overnight. Wrinkled, dry, and gross.
I felt that they peaked at the salads, without a doubt. Their modified caprese salad was slamming, balsamic vinegar reduction was pretty amazing. The wedge was very good as well, but something in it was very, very crunchy (I'm guessing some over crisped pancetta?)
As we waiting for our salads to be cleared, I noticed loaves of bread streaming out of the kitchen to what seemed like every table except for ours. I would have asked our waiter what the deal was, but we never saw him again until our dinner plates were being cleared.
I had the ribeye with the Oscar topping, wife had filet with a bleu cheese topping. Steak temps were good, but the plates themselves were warm in some spots, and ice cold in others. Steak flavor was lacking anything substantial. Oscar topping overall was good. Crab meat was very good, asparagus was under cooked. Wife's filet topping was odd. Just a disc of the bleu cheese butter covering the entire filet, and completely unmelted.
Being unimpressed with the entrees, we declined deserts. Bill was $180 w/ tip. Don't think we'll be back. I hate to say it since they're chains, but Fleming's and Ruth's both blew our experience out of the water for much less money. Having worked in restaurants, I understand that they can have off nights, but for $90 a head I expected a lot better. I can go to Houmas House for that price.
I really, really wanted to like it, too. Oh well.

I've never ordered the steaks, but one of the kid's got the surf and turf(filet) the other night and enjoyed it.I rarely order a steak out, and won't here most likely. Hate it wasn't a hit.

First time I ever went I left saying it was the best restaurant in BR. Second time was just "meh."
I got the Louisiana Redfish the first time and a Ribeye the second.

Damn, sucks that you had that experience for what you paid. I have had great meals the times I have been there. Maybe it was an off night, still that is not an excuse.

I've been warned to stay away from the steaks, which is sad considering it's a chophouse, but almost everythign I've tried was top notch (almost b/c of the entree I had last time)

Well I've been a half dozen times and never had much to complain about except the one time we went at 8:30 on a Friday night and it was packed and the service was a little slow. (sound familiar?)
I've always had really good food in respect to what I ordered, how it was prepared, served and tasted. Nice wine list, nice atmosphere. I refuse to sit in a booth though and that is my only real pet peeve. I'll sit at the bar until a table comes available or go somewhere else but I've never had that problem because I clarify that when making reservations and we've never just popped in.
Having said that, I'm an even bigger fan of Flemings. They may be a chain but for the most part the bigger steakhouses are. They've got it down perfectly and a wine list second only to Ruffino's which has become stellar over the last two years. The menu is pretty simple and straightforward but nonetheless it's properly executed.
Sorry Stroube's wasn't what you hoped and I certainly know what it's like to drop that kind of money to be underwhelmed. It's hard to justify a second shot even though I would recommend it.
And Houmas House is certainly a great choice as well.

A friend of mine, who frequents Stroube's, said Friday night was an off night for the place. I think the crowd really threw the staff off.
I've been a few times and had wonderful experiences. I wouldn't blame you for not, but if you would ever consider going back- it really is a great place. The Stroube's roll appetizer is one of my favorite things to eat!

That would be my warning to people as well. Food was good, steaks were underwhelming

This.
Once time heals the wound, I would give them another shot.

Maybe I shouldn't have gotten the steak then because I was underwhelmed, but it would seem that the restaurant specializes in that. The restaurant space and location were great though.

I ate the same ribeye on my 1st trip.....was certainly "meh." I do, however, eat steaks everywhere.....but it is not how I judge a restrnt.....just one of my checkpoints.
I will say, on several trips back - they have been a hit....and above average.
My wife always gets fish dishes - unless we are at a steakhouse - for entrees.....and has loved everything she has ordered here.
My last 2 trips were very good. They have some very, very good apps and very good dishes......just stay away from steaks.
If you want a steak in BR, go to Little Village, Flemings, or Ruths. Otherwise, Stroube's can suit your desires.

I'm just wondering how one can blame the crowd for bad service...
Did they band together and stage an uprising in the dinning room? Was someone passing out mushrooms and a scene straight out of Fear and Loathing transpired?
gonna have to explain that one...

yeah, it is almost as if they are saying "this place is great on a tuesday night when there are five occupied tables .. but when it gets crowded on friday night, it is a different restaurant .. "
Posted on 10/12/11 at 8:07 am to TigahRag
yea that's what i'm thinking he meant as well. if they cant handle a crowded Friday night then they have some serious staff issues.

I went a few Fridays back and the service was great.
After I had read here that the steaks were avg at best, I told my date to order something else.
Like most woman she won't listen and ordered the filet. After she fell in love with the corn crab bisque she told me " I should havbe ordered 2 bowls of soup instead of the steak.
The steak was the weakest part of the meal no doubt.

which, to me makes NO sense why their steaks are average ... this is something you can do really well at home yourself .. so why can't a supposed five-star restaurant with access to prime cuts and the proper equipment not do this ?
