I have an interview coming up, but I don't typically wear suits except to weddings and funerals.

Does Brooks Brothers have good suits, and do they tailor them well? There is a location nearby, and I was thinking about getting a charcoal gray three-button suit.

Any thoughts? I am not much of a snappy dresser and am hoping they can guide me in the right direction.

It won't matter. Just don't dress like a bum.

edit: In other words, Brooks Brothers is fine.

I find they are overpriced. Go to Macy's and buy you a Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger on sale. Go to a professional tailor and look like a million bucks!

How soon is your interview? It can take a few weeks to get the suit back from hemming/etc. at the Brooks Bros. here, and I'd expect a similar time frame at other locations.

Banana Republic will tailor for free if you have a BR card. They usually outsource the work to a local tailor- the one by me picks up on Tuesday and Friday or something like that. The work is different in every town, but it may work for you if you're in a time crunch. I like BR suits for what they cost (usually $300 or less on sale), and they serve my purpose well- I wear suits 2-3 times per year, so I have a gray suit for funerals, a brown suit for weddings and a tan suit for summer weddings.

Wear a white shirt to the interview. Since it's your only suit get solid navy or solid charcoal.

If you aren't going to need the suit for work there's no reason to spend a grand or more on it. You can look presentable with a Jos. A. Bank suit for a couple hundred. Don't buy 3 button unless you're 6'4"+.

Agree with this.

Navy Jo Banks suit, neatly tailored and pressed, white shirt, good tie, good shoes, profit.

I'm 24 and only have one suit that's not Jo Banks. Only wear it for client meetings and such. All else, Jo Banks because I will most likely mess it up.

BB on Canal in Nola. Go see Ben Clemente. Buy their suits and have them tailor them. I don't mind paying more for their finished product. It is very nice.

Brooks Brothers makes solid suits....get a two button, 3 button was a 1990s mistake...a nice pair of shoes helps, too...not slip-ons that are rubber bottomed that look like paddles.....but at the same time most people don't know how to dress so it won't matter, they won't know the difference...unless you are in law or finance/banking (IB).

I don't understand why people will pay $1000 for a suit off the rack when you can have a better one made for $8-900.

Cool. That's the kind of stuff I need to know. I have a lot of strong points, but fashion isn't one of them. My current suit is black with very narrow pinstripes, probably $1000 when I got it, but I have been reading that dark gray or dark navy are the way to go.

Good enough for your purposes, but I think BB cuts too "American" style. Way too baggy.

Unless he's applying for a job as a blackjack dealer or a walker, BB is the look to go for. It ought to have a center vent too.
