Windows 7 stuck at starting windows screen

Initial research shows an AVG update to be the problem. I can't get to safe mode so a buddy is making me a bout cd per avgs website. Anyone else having problems?

1. Reboot and start in safe mode- if boot succeeds try restoring to an earlier date.

2. If one fails, reboot and hit f8 when windows restarts, select repair option and be patient-

I used it for a few years, liked it. Then around 2013 or so it started missing malware. Swapped over the Avast at that time and have been pleased ever since.
